At least three times a day, a courier swings by our beauty department to drop off parcels of products that will hit stores about three months later. We won’t lie; it’s awesome. But, with great privilege comes great responsibility, right? We take our test-driving seriously, so that we can help you sort through the flood of palettes, sprays, polishes and more that hit shelves daily. Here, the seven new launches that seriously got us psyched this month.
Too Faced Sweet Peach Eye Shadow Collection, $59, toofaced.com (as of December 14)
Too Faced might be the hottest name in beauty right now (Kylie Jenner and Pat McGrath notwithstanding!), especially given that Estée Lauder just paid $1.4 billion to acquire the cheeky Californian brand. (That’s the most the parent company has ever dished out on a purchase, which is nuts considering it already owns big guns including M.A.C, Clinique, Tom Ford and Smashbox.) What’s more: The crazy hype as fans await the return of Sweet Peach (just search #tfsweetpeach on Twitter if you don’t know what I mean). After it sold out in a snap this March, the sweet-scented palette is coming back this month, along with highlighters, blush and lip glosses. I took the eye shadows for a whirl and I GET IT. The 18 mostly-neutral hues are so pigmented, velvety and blendable. While the fun hits of purple, coral and green allow for playfulness, I know I’ll end up scraping up every last bit of the useful matte taupe and beige. And yes, it smells like Fuzzy Peach candy and yes, I love that oh so much, even first thing in the morning. —Caitlin Kenny
L’Oréal Le Vernis à l’Huile by Colour Riche in Rubis Folies, $9, walmart.ca
I’ve always been a sucker for super shiny nails, which is why I love Le Vernis à l’Huile. It’s packed with rose, camellia and argan oil for rich colour and big-time shine, sans base or top coat. Aside from the formula, the brush stem makes application a breeze. Its shape slows the flow of polish so it doesn’t build up on the brush, and you never get a huge blob on your nail. Bonus: as it dries, it smells EXACTLY like Cherry Blasters. —Tara MacInnis [Editor’s note: Is there a theme here? We love sugar, OK?]
Oskia Renaissance Mask, $104, net-a-porter.com
I’ve probably tried out at least 20 face masks this past year (#jobperks) and while I’ve found many favourites that deliver on very specific promises (pore minimizing, under-eye plumping, laugh-line reducing), I’d yet to discover a single product that does it all. Until now. New to Canada via Net-a-Porter, Oskia’s top-selling mask is a one-step wonder: its combination of naturally derived ingredients (think: pineapple extract for gentle exfoliation and butterbur for soothing and healing) target pretty much every skin woe winter weather can inflict on me, leaving my skin feeling delightfully smooth and hydrated even after just one 10-minute application. —Charlotte Herrold
Marc Jacobs Le Marc Liquid Lip Crème, $41, sephora.com
Super matte, nude liquid lipsticks are a thing right now (hat tip, Kylie), but most look sorta meh on me. This, on the other hand, checks the boxes: the satin texture is plush and creamy; the coverage is full; and the colour isn’t boring. This rosy shade—Shush, Blush—is the deepest “nude” option. —Wing Sze Tang
Maybelline Dream Cushion, $19, mass retailers
This summer, I fell firmly in love with the ease of stick foundation (my fave is Make Up For Ever’s), swiping it on in seconds every morning. But now that temperatures are hitting the negs, I usually swap in a more hydrating liquid. The problem this year? I really can’t be bothered to go back to the mess. Instead, I’ve made fast friends with Maybelline’s new Dream Cushion. This isn’t the first cushion out there (which, ICYMI, is a format where the liquid foundation is soaked into a sponge that’s stored inside a convenient compact case along with a little applicator), this is the first one I’ve found that suits my yellow undertones (for some reason, most I’ve tried are quite pink). The glowy coverage builds easily where I need it, and stays in place nicely all day—though even if it didn’t, the portable, spill-proof packaging makes touching up easy peasy. —C.K.
Laura Mercier Candleglow Sheer Perfecting Powder, $46, holtrenfrew.com
I’ve been looking for my perfect finishing powder for a while, and always found those that I tried out to be too drying, too shimmery or too heavy. But this new Laura Mercier find sets my makeup beautifully without adding a heavy extra layer, and adds an all-over hint of warmth to my complexion that is SO welcome come winter. What I love best about it is that it tones down shine without drying out my skin—and because it’s a pressed powder I can easily tuck in into my purse for midday touch-ups. —C.H.
Teeez Style Addict Highlighter in Berlin Sunrise, $37, teeezcosmetics.com
I put in almost zero effort when taking my makeup look from day to night. A dusting of eyeshadow, a little extra mascara, and a dab of highlighter is all it takes. But that last step is a new one, because highlighters used to scare the crap out of me. Why would I want to make my oily skin look shinier? Enter this highlighter from Teeez. It’s weightless, sheer and so easy to dab on with just my ring finger so I can keep the glow subtle, or amp it up. —T.M.
