The Men’s Team rom Rideau View Golf Clubs wins their 13th A Division Intersectional title

Throughout Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec, 63 Ottawa Valley Golf Association Member Clubs participated in match play competition on Sunday, July 12. Seventeen OVGA Clubs hosted 756 players with their goal to win points for their club and move up a division in the competition.

Sand Point (Arnprior), Ottawa Hunt and Rivermead golf clubs team members played in the “A” Division of the OVGA Intersectionals at Rideau View Golf Club and were treated to not only a beautiful day but also a golf course in pristine condition.

As the host club, Rideau View was considered the favourite especially with their total team index of +.1. Of their previous twelve “A” Division wins, nine had been won on their home track. This statistic was also reflected for Rivermead and Ottawa Hunt Club teams also with their respective 8/11 and 4/5 wins on home soil.

Statistics are one component in the competition with the other being the skill set of the competitors involved in their matches. It was apparent very quickly that the home club was facing its stiffest competition from the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club Team. With two matches left in the competition, Ottawa Hunt held a one stroke advantage over Rideau View. But the two anchor players for Rideau View came in with 11 out of a maximum twelve points to cement the win for Rideau View by 4 points.

In the end, Rideau View and the Ottawa Hunt were both winners. Rideau View ended up with their 13th win in “A” Division in OVGA competition and Ottawa Hunt won the right to avenge their loss on their home course in 2016. Ottawa Hunt will host Rideau View, Rivermead and GreyHawk, who were the winners in “B” Division at Prescott. Normally the winning team in “A” Division has the right to host but a rule in OVGA Intersectional competition states that any club can only host for two consecutive years.

Ed Pinsent, Rideau View Club Captain, was a bundle of nerves throughout the day and he didn’t get a chance to relax with a pint until the final score was posted and a win secured for his Club. Earlier in the day, he had been asked about the Intersectional competition and what it meant to Rideau View players and members.

“Everybody here understands that this is one of our biggest events of the year,” were Mr. Pinsent’s words. “This is our Super Bowl. This is the one we chase. Our players are nervous and we don’t relax until we know the final outcome. Even though we’ve won the trophy twelve times, there’s still a lot of pressure to win the next one and we’re up against some tremendous teams and great players.”

After the win we caught up with an obviously relieved club captain celebrating with players, caddies and spectators. “I waited all day for this and I know that people say they’re speechless and I’ve never been speechless but at this point I’m totally relaxed,” said Mr. Pinsent.

“The Men’s “A” Intersectionals is my favourite day of competition every golf season and it was our pleasure to host again this year,” said Rideau View General Manager Steve Ducat. “We’ve always thought of ourselves as the golfer’s golf club and there’s nothing like team competition to bring out the pride each club member has for their players and their club. It’s particularly nice when every player on the team contributes points. It was the  key to Rideau View being able to capture their record 13th win in the “A” Division, particularly against strong competition from Ottawa Hunt, Rivermead and Sand Point.”

Members of the winning Rideau View Team were Griffon Jones, Austin Evans, Jason Wilkes, Adam Kingsbury, Paul Spare, Phillip Martin, Tim Sullivan, Justin DeVroome, Josh Goheen, Mark Mackay, Steven Fritsch and Chris Collins. Three rookie team members also received a traditional dunking in the 6th hole pond.

Congratulations to the OVGA and their representatives for making another memorable day for so many OVGA Member Club Players.
