According to the Nobel Prize winner, Otto Heinrich Warburg, alkalinity plays a crucial role in our health!

With two doctorates, one in chemistry and a second in medicine, Dr. Warburg won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1931.

Dr. Warburg was awarded the Nobel prize for his discovery that cancer is caused by weakened cell respiration due to lack of oxygen at the cellular level and proving cancer thrives in anaerobic (without oxygen), or acidic, conditions. In other words, the main cause for cancer is acidity of the human body.

In his Nobel Prize winning study, Dr. Warburg illustrated the environment of the cancer cell. According to Warburg, “damaged cell respiration causes fermentation, resulting in low pH (acidity) at the cellular level. Warburg also wrote about oxygen’s relationship to the pH of cancer cells internal environment. Since fermentation was a major metabolic pathway of cancer cells, Warburg reported that cancer cells maintain a lower pH, as low as 6.0, due to lactic acid production and elevated CO2. HE PROVED CANCER CANNOT GROW NOR DEVELOP IN BODY ALKALINITY OF 7.36.

He firmly believed that there was a direct relationship between pH and oxygen. Higher pH means higher concentration of oxygen molecules while lower pH means lower concentrations of oxygen. A normal healthy cell undergoes an adverse change when it can no longer take in oxygen to convert glucose into energy.

In the absence of oxygen, the cell reverts to a primal nutritional program to nourish itself by converting glucose through the process of fermentation. The lactic acid produced by fermentation lowers the cell pH (acid/alkaline balance) and destroys the ability of DNA and RNA to control cell division. The cancer cells then begin to multiply. The lactic acid simultaneously causes severe local pain as it destroys cell enzymes. Cancer appears as a rapidly growing external cell covering, with a core of dead cells.”

The truth is… MOST PEOPLE ARE LIVING IN AN ACIDIC STATE!

What is a healthy pH in the body?

Blood – The average pH is slightly alkaline at 7.4

Mouth – The average pH is slightly acidic to neutral at 6.5 to 7.5 for proper functioning of enzymes, such as amylase or ptyalin – which help breakdown food for digestion

Stomach – The average pH is low and acidic at around 4-6 in the upper stomach and around 1.5 to 3 in the lower stomach. The low pH is due to hydrochloric acid, which helps to ensure proper functioning of the enzyme, pepsin.

Intestines – The average pH is slightly acidic to neutral at around 5-7

What happens when your pH is too acidic (acidosis)?

Inflammation

Achy joints

Headaches

Sleepiness

Confusion / Mental Fog

Dream time is diminished – dream expansion

Digestive disorders

Heart disease

Anaerobic pathogens – weakened immunity

Poor muscle performance

Low libido

As you can see, having an overly acidic body is grounds for disaster. Nobody wants to feel bad all day! And I KNOW you don’t want that. Which is why alkalizing your body is so important.

There are a ton of reasons your body becomes too acidic, but on the flip side, there are also so many ways to increase alkalinity and increase your overall health and wellbeing.

What causes an acidic environment?

Stress

Breathing improperly

Meditation

Yoga

Dehydration

Not enough fruits and veggies

There are 2 types of acidosis – respiratory and metabolic.

Respiratory Acidosis

Respiratory acidosis occurs when the lungs cannot remove the CO2 the body produces, which causes body fluids, especially the blood, to become acidic. This may happen because of:

chronic airway conditions, like asthma

injury to the chest

obesity, which can make breathing difficult

sedative misuse

overuse of alcohol

muscle weakness in the chest

problems with the nervous system

deformed chest structure

Metabolic Acidosis

Metabolic acidosis starts in the kidneys instead of the lungs. It occurs when they can’t remove enough acid from the body. There are three major forms of metabolic acidosis:

Diabetic acidosis, which occurs in people with poorly controlled diabetes. If your body lacks enough insulin, ketones build up in your body and acidify your blood.

Hyperchloremic acidosis results from a loss of sodium bicarbonate. This base helps to keep the blood neutral. Both diarrhea and vomiting can cause this type of acidosis.

Lactic acidosis occurs when there’s too much lactic acid in your body. Many things can cause a buildup of lactic acid. These include chronic alcohol use, heart failure, cancer, seizures, liver failure, prolonged lack of oxygen and low blood sugar. Even prolonged exercise can lead to lactic acid buildup.

The GOOD news is that you can create balance again!

Here are some tips to begin implementing RIGHT NOW to get you feeling great once again.

Warm lemon water upon waking on an empty stomach

Juicing

Eat whole foods – ditch sugar, wheat, dairy, processed junk, alcohol

Gentle movement, like yoga

Learn to deal with stress in a positive way

Get plenty of sleep

1 head broccoli

2 bundles bok choy

1 bundle kale

1 lemon

2" turmeric

1-2 beets (for methylation)

1 orange

Instructions

Put all ingredients in your juicer.

Pour into your favorite glass.

I knew that I didn’t want to stay the way I was any longer so despite my hesitation, at the advice of a friend, I decided to try a fresh pressed green juice and the rest is history.

So when it comes to actually supporting your body’s needs and it’s craving for balance, you need to learn HOW to juice for HEALTH and VITALITY.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make when they start juicing is that they don’t know how to juice the RIGHT way.

Juicing Tips

1. Aim for a 4:1 ratio – veggies to fruit

Fruit is healthy, sure. But you can have too much HEALTHY sugar too. Sugar creates inflammation and inflammation creates disease.

Stick to low glycemic fruits, like green apples and berries and mix up your veggies, always remembering to add in as many greens as possible for that incredible benefits, such as alkalizing – to balance all the acid from the world we live in today – anti-inflammatory, fuel for your cells, helps to even out skintone and support healthy immunity. I could go on and on.

2. Include a good base, like cucumber or celery

These are loaded with water, so they are great for hydration as well as providing a good base to your juice. Plus they’re delicious!

3. Don’t be afraid of superfoods – turmeric and ginger are my favorites to add in’s

Both are chock-full of anti-inflammatory properties, not to mention they give your juice a major kick!

I always ask for extra at the juice bar and when I make my own, nobody will drink it because it’s way too potent!

4. Don’t be afraid of herbs

Parsley, basil and mint are some of my favorites. Experiment. Some you’ll absolutely love and others, well, not so much and that’s okay. Only one way to find out though.

5. Don’t get stuck with the same juice recipe

The saying, “eat the rainbow” is true, even when juicing! Each vegetable and fruit provides their own set of unique benefits. In order to reap all the rewards, mix it up!

6. Be strategic about when you drink your juice

On an empty stomach is best to allow all the incredible micronutrients a chance to find their way into your cells to be used as fuel.

Pre and post workout are also great times to drink juice for energy producing fuel. Complex carbs (such as those found in fruits and veggies) provide glucose, which is then turned into useable energy, giving your muscles a consistent energy supply during your workout.

Juicing after a workout is also great to replenish your glycogen stores (sugar stores, the good sugars). Refueling with the right nutrients, such as protein, carbs and electrolytes helps ease muscle soreness. Water is super important, of course. But nutrients are essential as well, especially when putting that kind of stress on the body.

7. BONUS: Drink your juice right away

The longer it sits, the less quality nutrients are present. You want those enzymes ALIVE and KICKING’ so make it fresh and drink it within 20-30 minutes.
