Your pregnancy has been confirmed and you cannot wait to tell the world about the newest addition to your family! Just take a deep breath first and consider the following:

Partner, family and friends – who do you tell first and in what order?

How do you tell them? You do not want them to feel overwhelmed or left out.

When do you tell them? How long do you wait before announcing your pregnancy?

The first person to know about your pregnancy should be your partner. This will give you both time to absorb the news and prepare for your baby. Depending on your partner’s sense of humor, hobbies, passions, demeanor and sense of romance, you may decide to announce your pregnancy in a funny, romantic, creative or unique way.

Ideas for pregnancy announcement to your partner:

Add that extra little touch to your announcement gift by including something that reflects your partner’s hobbies or passions such as a baby size baseball uniform or a mini set of golf clubs with a onesie that has a picture of a baby playing golf on it.

Write the announcement on the bathroom mirror before he has his shower – it will then be visible in the foggy mirror.

Change his screen saver to say something like “Hi Daddy” or “We are pregnant” or something that is meaningful to both of you or a riddle that he has to solve.

Next time he asks for a drink, serve him in a baby bottle.

Replace his music with baby songs.

Set up a romantic dinner and serve baby vegetables and/or use baby utensils for dessert. You could even use the baby vegetables to spell out “baby” on his plate.

The traditional “bun in the oven” can still be a great way of surprising your partner – just put some fresh buns in the oven for breakfast and time your announcement of “We have a bun in the oven” to catch him off guard.

Give him a printed T-shirt with words such as “Going to be a father”, “Dad-to-be” or “Look what I did”.

Does your partner like Chinese food? If yes, order a meal and include some fortune cookies. Then just replace the message with one you have prepared such as “We are expecting. Due Date ….”.

Put a “baby-on-board” sign on his car.

If he likes cigars, add the announcement to one of his favorite cigars.

Make up a photo album starting with a photo of when you first met him, followed by photos of the years you have known him and ending with a photo of your ultrasound/sonogram with “future daddy” written underneath.

Use your positive pregnancy test as a surprise or in a photo. For example, you could choose a very romantic moment and give him the beautifully wrapped positive pregnancy test while proposing fatherhood (like a proposal but with a twist).

No matter how you choose to announce your pregnancy to your partner, it will be a memorable event, so try and capture it with a photo or video.

Announcing Your Pregnancy To Your Families

You may want to wait until after your first ultrasound or first trimester to tell your family. That decision is up to you, but you should take some time for you and your partner to enjoy your awesome secret and to plan ahead.

You have to make the decision on who you tell first, in what order or do you just tell everyone at the same time. For example, would you like to announce your pregnancy to both sets of parents first and then spread the news to the rest of the family? For this, you will need to plan ahead as you do not want members of the family feeling hurt because they heard it from someone else before you told them.

As a couple, you could make the announcement in a number of ways such as at a family gathering, or with a card, e-card,  gifts, photos, ornaments, calendars, posters, bumper stickers, cakes or cupcakes, cookies, invitations (with due date on), video, a pair of booties, T-shirts, hats or caps or mugs.

Here are some interesting ways of announcing your awesome secret to your families:

Create a family tree and fill in your due date in the spot under your names.

Serve blue and pink cupcakes at a family gathering and see who guesses first.

Send family members some homemade cookies with “grandma”, “grandpa”, “uncle”, “aunt”, etc. or  “baby due” frosting.

Send family a card from baby-due addresses to grandparents, uncles and aunts.

Create a video and choose a theme (funny, creative, serious ….) and reveal your surprise.

Send everyone a mug with their relationship to your baby on it (grandma, grandpa, uncle, aunt, etc.).

The selection of beautiful, cute, stylish, fun or quirky pregnancy story cards to be found online gives you a wide choice. Great for adding to your scrapbook.

Give your family a jar of Preggo spaghetti sauce and see who guesses first.

Via e-mail (for distant family members) using creative photos such as a cute photo of your feet, your partner’s feet  and a pair of booties in-between or a framed copy of your sonogram.

Customize labels for beer bottles, wine bottles and/or soft drinks to reflect your baby announcement. Then hand them out at a family gathering or send to family members.

Let a photo do the talking for you using your pregnancy test, ultrasound or being creative. For inspiration, have a look at announcing ideas, pregnancy announcements and family pregnancy announcements.

Give the future grandparents a baby book with the message “something for you to read to your grandchild”. Alternatives such as hats or shirts with “world’s best grandpa/grandma” are also popular. Bibs with “I love grandma/grandpa”  or “I can’t wait to meet you” are great gifts.

Announcing Your Pregnancy to Your Friends

This is where you can have fun and be as creative as you want to be. To avoid forgetting to tell someone, make a list of all your friends and sent them an e-mail or video. Facebook is also becoming a popular place for pregnancy announcements.

You may want to have a gathering for your close friends and surprise them first. This would be a great photo opportunity too for your scrapbook.

There is no perfect way of announcing your pregnancy; it is for you to decide how you want to break the baby news to family and friends. Whether you do it the traditional way, modern way or in a unique way is up to you.

However you decide to make this big announcement, make sure you have a camera handy to capture those priceless memories.

I do not have a face to see,

Or put inside a frame.

I do not have soft cheeks to kiss,

I don’t yet have a name.

You can’t yet hold my tiny hands,

Nor whisper in my ear.

It’s still too soon to sing a song,

Or cuddle me so near.

But all will change come August,

That’s when they say I’m due.

I’m the littlest McK,

I can’t wait till I meet you.

All I ask between now and then,

Is your patience while I grow.

I promise I’ll be worth the wait,

Because of all the love we’ll know.

So what I have to give you now,

Is a wish to you from me.

I cannot wait to be a part

Of this wonderful family!
