 The Ruffin Volunteer Fire Department in Rockingham County is asking the community to pray for its chief following a hit and run Saturday night. The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office stated in a news release that a silver or grey sedan drove off at a high rate of speed after hitting a first responder helping with a wreck on southbound U.S. 29 near Worsham Mill Road at approximately 8:50 p.m. Saturday.Multiple media outlets are reporting that Ruffin Fire Chief Gary "Peanut" Brown was the first responder struck by the vehicle. Troopers and the fire department have yet to confirm Brown as the victim but the fire department has issued multiple Facebook posts about Brown having last said he's in stable condition following a surgery early Sunday morning. The N.C. Highway Patrol is now investigating the hit and run. Deputies said troopers believe the sedan is missing the driver's side mirror and may have damage to the right front quarter panel or grill. The sheriff's office asks anyone with information about the hit and run to call the N.C. Highway Patrol at (336) 634-5606 or Rockingham County Crime Stoppers at (336) 349-9683. RUFFIN — An emergency worker was struck by a vehicle while assisting a motorist involved in a separate wreck on U.S. 29 Business, according to a Rockingham County EMS dispatcher.The unidentified emergency worker was transported to Moses Cone Hospital.The dispatcher did not know the victim’s medical condition.The Ruffin Volunteer Fire Department was called out about 8:50 p.m. to a wreck on southbound U.S. 29 Business near Worsham Mill Road.At 8:54 p.m., an emergency worker was struck by a vehicle, the dispatcher said.The dispatcher said the Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck.
