The Emergency Communications Specialist, World Vision South Sudan will coordinate the operations of the response field communications for the South Sudan in close coordination with WV South Sudan (WVSS) National Office; to provide the communications leadership, support and resource to enable the Partnership to effectively engage with its various public engagement audiences in order to raise funds, ensure accountability to supporters, contribute to WV’s advocacy efforts, while protecting and promoting WV’s response work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overall Coordination:

Collaborate and coordinate with WVSS senior leadership, the WVSS communications manager, regional office and global emergency communications director in the planning and execution of an overarching response communications strategy, objectives, initiatives, media and general messaging.

Serve as a liaison with Support Office (SO) communications teams to help position and respond to communications and media needs for different audiences globally.

Advise the response team, regional and national communications staff and relevant Partnership stakeholders on key communications issues, initiatives and messaging – globally, regionally and nationally -- as/when needed.

Liaise with communications teams across responding agencies to explore, develop and wherepossible agree on joint approaches and messaging related to the humanitarian response.
Support and coordinate with the National Office (NO) communications team in order to deliver a one-office communications response, and capacity build where appropriate to ensure delivery.

Content for Supporter and Community Engagement:

Clarify, prioritise and service key response, Partnership/SO/NO fundraising objectives and expectations via regular interfacing with Partnership marketing reps (via conference calls, emails, etc.); support grant management and corporate partnership goals; help generate dollar handles and marketing packages based on programme funding requirements.

Produce, review, edit and post communications resources (stories, video, photos, media advisories, etc.) from the field using WV systems for Partnership-wide use, in collaboration with national and regional communications staff.

Work directly and closely with national communications staff for optimal coordination and production of these resources by/with their teams.

Ensure the embedding of community voice communications in content development.

Reputation and Influence:

Clarify, prioritise and service key Partnership/SO/NO media and social media objectives and expectations in coordination with Partnership stakeholders.

Proactively monitor and manage any reputation risk issues by working closely with response and Partnership leaders.

Collaborate and coordinate with WVSS communications and Partnership social media specialist colleagues to develop and implement an effective social media strategy.

Develop and maintain professional contacts with key international media in collaboration with their home country SOs.

Train, prepare and brief response team colleagues as media spokespeople as required.

Coordinate and screen journalist/other field visit requests re timing, approvals, logistics, issues, security, etc. – together with corresponding Support Offices and communications teams.

Create and update Q&As, fact sheets and other media materials.

Co-ordinate visits by WV leaders and delegations, including required approvals, scheduling, photo opportunities, media interviews, coordination with SO media teams, video production and messaging etc.

Staff Engagement:

Guide response leadership on internal communications needs within the response and together with the National Office to support strategy execution and organisational effectiveness.

Ensure key internal stakeholders are provided with channels and quality flow of content related to the response and its objectives and impacts.

Maintain a response presence on Partnership internal channels (wvcentral, Connections, Executive Briefing etc) to achieve strong organisational positioning of the response.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Required: A university degree or its equivalent in the field of journalism or public relations.
Proven field communications experience in emergency settings.
Ability to work effectively under pressure.
Excellent journalistic skills with technical skills in shooting photo and / or video.
Demonstrated ability to think strategically, manage to plan and meet deadlines.
Proven ability to lead a team.
Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural and communication skills.
Have an excellent command of English, both written and spoken.

Preferred:

Ability to work in difficult insecure and stressful conditions.
