About Saks Fifth Avenue and its history
Saks Fifth Avenue is a high-end department store owned by the American based global fashion retailer, Saks Inc. The store was founded in 1898 with the mission of offering the latest in fashion and upmarket living products. Saks Fifth Avenue was spawned from a retail business founded by Andrew Saks in 1867. In 1923, Saks & Co combined with Gimbel Brother Inc which was a real turning point point for the retailer. Saks Fifth Avenue expanded considerably during the 1930s and 40s opening approximately 10 stores including Miami and Chicago.
Saks Fifth Avenue was acquired by BATUS Inc in 1973 marking a notable change for the business. BATUS Inc then sold in 1990 to Investcorp SA who later floated the retailer in 1996.
