When the snow is calling there’s little more that you can (and should) do then pack up your skis, snowboards, boots and snow jackets and get thee to the slopes. If you’re in Victoria or are thinking of branching off from your usual destination (Thredbo, Perisher etc.) then Mount Hotham is more than a top choice. Especially seeing as it’s a nice drive from Melbourne (4.5 hours) and a worthwhile weekend trip from Sydney (8 hours).
Oh and did we forget to mention it’s Victoria’s highest alpine resort. No joke.
What you’ll get when you arrive is plenty of pow pow space - 32 hectares of it, to be precise. As always, there’s slopes for beginner, intermediate or advanced snow bunnies as well as 35km of cross country skiing for the pros and enough bars and restaurants to keep you entertained when the day is done.

Top 7 Places to Stay in Mount Hotham
Essentially you have two villages to stay at if you wish to be close to the slopes. One is Mount Hotham itself, which gives you walking access to the lifts. Your other option is Dinner Plain, which is 10km from the resort. Which one you prefer depends on the type of trip you’re planning (Dinner Plain is more luxurious) and your budget (the further from resort you are, the cheaper, generally.)

You’ll be hard pressed to nab an apartment more central than White Crystal. It literally sits in the Hotham Central building opposite the day carpark making it uber convenient to everything including a ski-hire store, restaurant, supermarket and more. As for the fields? You’re literally staying opposite the Summit training area, so you tell us whether it’s central or not.

Distance from Melbourne: 4.5 hours

Chair lift opening hours: Most open at 8:30am and close between 4 and 5pm. Between 28 June and 14 September the Heavenly Valley (peak) lift opens at 7:30am.
Lift pass prices: Early season:$59 (one day), $112 (2 day). Prices will increase during peak season. If you book early online (at least one day in advance) you’ll receive a discount, however bear in mind you’ll need to allow 7 days for postage. Details here.
