History of Dorothy Perkins Stores
Dorothy Perkins started out as Ladies Hosiery and Underwear Limited in 1909. The company changed name to Dorothy Perkins in 1939 in the same year that their seventy-fifth store was opened. The store continued to grow under the leadership of the Farmer family, expanding to 250 stores in 1966 and simultaneously rolled out cash registers in all shops.
The 1970s were an interesting era for the fashion store with the introduction of new styles; hot pants, maxis and wedges. In 1977, Dorothy Perkins purchases their now famous Oxford Street shop, a staggering 7,500ft tall! Two years goes on and the Burton Group acquires Dorothy Perkins. The Burton Group PLC becomes Arcadia Group PLC in 1998, putting Dorothy Perkins alongside Topman and Topshop.
