How do I apply for Australian Unity travel insurance?
Here’s how to go about applying for travel cover with Australian Unity.
What do you need cover for? Make sure that the plan you choose covers every aspect of your holiday, from your activities to your destination and the number of people in your party.
Do you need cover for just yourself? Is the cover for just you or do you need cover for a travelling companion? Note that both singles and doubles policies cover dependent children.
Do you have a pre-existing medical condition? Australian Unity requires that you complete a medical test if you have a pre-existing medical condition and/or if you’re 70 years of age or older.
Do you want to get your policy online or on the phone? You can get a quote online and then contact Australian Unity via phone or email to apply. Once approved, you will receive a Certificate of Insurance.
How do I make a claim with Australian Unity?
If you need to file a claim, take the following steps:
Give notice. Get in touch with Australian Unity or your insurance advisor as soon possible after the incident. You can reach the Australian Unity by phone or email, and you need start the process within 30 days of returning to Australia or risk not having your claim paid.
Provide the necessary information. You will be asked to supply documentation to support your claim. Depending on the nature of the incident, you might be be asked for original police, medical and dental reports, evidence of ownership, operating manuals, original receipts and written statements from transport providers.
Be honest. Your insurer need to have all the necessary information to decide whether or not to approve your application for travel cover. If, at the time of a claim, your information is revealed to false or incomplete, your claim will be rejected or your policy cancelled entirely.

Question: What do I do if my luggage has been lost or stolen?
The first thing to do is report the loss or theft to the police in that country and obtain a written statement detailing the loss or theft. Be sure to include all items missing. Following that, get in touch with Australian Unity to file a claim.
Question: Am I liable for an excess on my policy?
Yes. You pay $100 excess on your policy.
Question: Who do I speak with if I don’t like the way my claim was handled?
You can get in touch with one of the customer service officers who will try and resolve the dispute. If you’re still unhappy, the matter will be referred to the internal dispute resolution department. You can also escalate your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Question: I need to complete a medical assessment, how does that work?
You and your doctor will have to complete a medical assessment form and submit it to International SOS for review. If accepted, you’ll have to pay an additional premium to have your pre-existing medical condition covered by the terms of your contract. This applies automatically to travellers aged 70 years and older.
Question: How can I pay for travel insurance?
You can only pay with a credit card. Australian Unity accepts Visa, Mastercard and Bank cards.
Question: Can I cancel my Australian Unity policy if I’m not happy with it?
You have a cooling-off period of 21 days during which you can cancel your policy. Provided you haven’t already started your holiday or filed a claim, you’ll receive a full refund of your premium.
