Welcome to the April Chronicle. There is plenteous to discuss, including information about a multi-campus district study, the Board of Regents’ law-making strategies and more.

CSN Multi-Campus District Model Study

At the extremity of March, CSN President Michael Richards and ASCSN President Brenda Romero held the Presidents’ Chats without ceasing each campus.

The Board of Regents held a e~ meeting on Friday and approved the entrance of a feasibility study to take heed at transitioning CSN from a multi-campus individual college to a multi-campus province model. Our Institutional Advisory Council has likewise endorsed the study. We will toil with the system to propose some outline of the committee and timetables, that we will report to the Board of Regents Committee ~ward Community Colleges at the next gathering. I hope to engage faculty, truncheon, students, Institutional Advisory Council and community members on this study to make improved service at each of our three campuses.

CSN Budget Priorities
The Board likewise discussed and endorsed legislative priorities at the Friday concourse. These are separate from ‘wrap round up’ items that include caseload advancement and continued funding for the UNLV of medicine school. They will finalize these operational and good priorities in June and then de~d on them at a special Board of Regents collection of people in August.

Operational enhancements:

Faculty & Staff Compensation

The Governor directed public entities to build classified step increases into their bag requests and NSHE will request its of the same meaning for professional merit, which is near 2.5 percent. While the decisive merit calculation will not be completed till base budgets are constructed this summer, they reckon the request will be approximately $10 a thousand thousand to $10.5 million in FY 18 and $20m -$21m in FY 19.

Formula Enhancement in favor of Community Colleges

This would be an increase in the weight for positive Career & Technical Education credits completed and would equate to an additional estimated $7 million each year for CSN.

A Technical Formula Adjustment with a view to DRI

The Workforce Innovations for a New Nevada (WINN) Fund

While this hurried response workforce training fund, enacted in the 2015 uncommon legislative session, will not likely subsist part of the NSHE budget, the Board testament discuss a resolution to support continued funding of this antecedence in the Governor’s budget.

Silver State Opportunity Grant

NSHE is requesting that funding in spite of the program be made permanent and that the Board solicitation an additional $5 million in funding to open the program to serve students enrolled in at in the smallest degree 12 credits, first serving students enrolled in 15 credits, with the remaining funds then serving students enrolled in at smallest 12 credits until all such funds are exhausted.

Increasing Capacity System Wide

This sums up projects proposed ~ means of each institution to expand our expertness to meet community needs. As element of this, CSN has proposed three guide projects and workforce training redesign, which are described in more detail in this place.

Capital Priorities

CSN’s proposed Health and Science pile in collaboration with Nevada State College was third part on the board’s capital anteriority list Friday. UNR’s engineering construction was first and NSC’s educational resource was second. There will likely exist more discussion on these at the June company.

First Steps (formerly known as Mandatory Matriculation Policy)

Therefore, I am cheerful to announce that we are changing the stead of what was formerly called the Mandatory Matriculation Policy to First Steps. This is the Achieving the Dream expanded director requiring all recent high school graduates to thorough placement testing, advising and orientation before enrolling. Aptly named, First Steps is the trial we aspire to one day acquire all new students first complete precedent to enrollment.

Faculty & Staff Questions

Why carry into effect we have multi-cultural graduation celebrations?

These celebrations are accomplished at many higher education institutions. They show one of many strategic activities we hold at CSN to help eliminate longstanding gaps in grade-attainment that have a direct pack close and lead to disparate socioeconomic conditions. According to recent data from the Lumina Foundation, 37.4 percent of innocent residents in Nevada, age 25-64, obtain a college degree compared to 24 percent of African Americans and 13.8 percent of Hispanics in our pass. Celebrations that highlight these under-represented graduates’ accomplishments amidst their family, friends, with their body and staff are important to refrain from create the college-going culture we every part of want for our state. I trustful longing you’ll join us at these events and of path, at the Commencement Ceremony on May 16.

What’s the contrast between different proposals to remove Nevada’s community colleges from the Nevada System of Higher Education and the multi-campus circuit model that we will be studying?

I apprehend that there is a lot of demolition between these two. There are some public officials who advocate that Nevada’s four community colleges should be governed by a withdrawn board, apart from the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents.

However, Regents approved a study to change CSN from a multi-campus sole college, as it is now, to a multi-campus province model, still under the Board of Regents. This study determine examine if CSN should create again autonomous campuses with a more level structure, similar to many of our come in sight colleges throughout the nation.

Now that we are expanding athletics by adding soccer teams this year, execute you think this will impact our prompted by emulation edge as an educational institution?

This devise enhance our competitive edge for manifold reasons. CSN athletes are very prosperous academically and can only add to our tillage of student success. I also make no doubt of having a competitive soccer team because men and women, in a community that embraces this sport, will not barely spread more awareness about CSN for example an academic institution but as some athletic opportunity throughout the region.

CSN’s president and cabinet has a history of promoting equity among employee groups. With the recently made known collective bargaining agreement in place by academic faculty, how will the corporation ensure continued equity between different employee groups at CSN?

Over the next few months, we will have plenteous discussion about how to incorporate the reinvigorated collective bargaining system into our organizational civilization. CSN has received accolades for our shared governance from our accrediting dead ~ and I prize the relationships we own among our employee groups. I be favored with every intention of maintaining and protecting uprightness for all of our employees, including their faculty to contribute to college decision formation.

With CSN exploring new administrative structures, employees are concerned hither and thither how such changes might affect their roles up~ campus, especially those employees that make provision services at multiple campus locations. Looking at the proud picture is important, but how strength these big picture changes affect those employees laboring with students on the “meet face to face lines”?
This is an excellent discussion and one that must be worked aloud through the course of the feasibleness study. I hope that employees are not greatly concerned. about potential structural shifts. Change be able to be uncomfortable, but if studied well and implemented collaboratively, it can be done far more smoothly. Keep in heed that the impetus for this vary is to further empower our employees laboring with students and to diminish the degree of remoteness between leadership, employees and students.

The Northwest campus is many times been referred to as the S.T.E.M. or S.T.E.A.M. Campus. studies look that the arts are crucial against the development of science, technology, engineering and math, devise the Northwest campus have an “A”?

Adding the arts is very much likely.  As the feasibility study adhering CSN manageability or decentralization proceeds, there is an important principle included in the design for the study:  campuses be disposed have a comprehensive curriculum for not special education.   Should the close examiner committee adopt that principle, the arts bequeath be part of the curriculum that is offered.

Best,

Mike
