PRESS RELEASE (10/21/2013) - Hudson Valley N.Y. Contact Lens Specialist Dr. Melvin Guzman, an Optometrist at Seeta Eye Centers advised those preparing for Halloween to be cautious and carefully consider the risks of buying non corrective decorative cosmetic contact lenses as part of their costumes. “Changing your eye color can really be a fun part of your costume, but many people simply forget that contact lenses are a medical device,” stated Dr. Guzman. “Even someone with perfect vision would still need an eye exam and a fitting prescription in order to safely wear any kind of contacts, including non corrective decorative cosmetic lenses,” Dr. Guzman explained.

Ophthalmologist Andreas Wolter, M.D., also shared the need to take a cautious approach. “The problem is not that people use decorative, noncorrective lenses-but that they buy the contacts without a prescription through unlicensed vendors on the Internet or at flea markets and specialty shops,” shared Dr. Wolter. “Contact lenses are very safe when properly fit by an eye doctor, but buying over-the-counter contact lenses without proper fitting exposes you to huge risk including scratched corneas, “pink eye” conjunctivitis and even more serious types of potentially blinding infection from corneal infection or keratitis which can result in a corneal ulcer,” commented Dr. Wolter.

“As a Hudson Valley eye physician and surgeon for more than 25 years, I continue to be amazed by patients who come to us around each Halloween with medical eye problems that are the result of contacts purchased without a fitting and prescription,” remarked Satish Modi, M.D.

The safe and effective use of contact lenses-whether decorative or not-requires proper fitting and education about their care to prevent the potential for serious eye  problems from becoming a reality.
