Following the announcements of its Midnight and Competition line-ups, Sundance 2016 has announced its star-studded Premieres line-up. The festival has also announced its Spotlight category, Sundance Kids, and the evolving Special Events section.
Rob Burnett’s The Fundamentals of Caregiving has been announced as the Closing Night Film. The film stars Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, and Selena Gomez, and was previously called The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving. It’s got a lot of buzz surrounding it already. And having its world premiere at Sundance 2016 only pours fuel on the fire in that respect. More and more films are breaking out of Sundance with Oscar buzz at the start of the year. And this could definitely be a contender next month.
Kelly Reichardt returns behind the camera with her anticipated follow-up to 2013’s Night Moves. She reunites with frequent collaborator Michelle Williams for the adaptation of Maile Meloy’s stories. Williams shares the screen with Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart, Rosanna Arquette, James Le Gros, Jared Harris, and Lily Gladstone, and it’s another one with awards potential written all over it.
Michelle Williams will also star opposite Casey Affleck in Kenneth Lonergan’s highly anticipated Manchester by the Sea. The film marks Lonergan’s long-awaited follow-up to Margaret, which was plagued with distribution difficulties, shot in 2005 but only released in 2011. Here’s to hoping nothing of that sort happens this time around.
After making his directorial debut six years ago adapting David Foster Wallace’s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, John Krasinski is finally back behind the camera for his sophomore feature, The Hollars. Krasinski also stars in the comedy drama, Anna Kendrick, Margo Martindale, Richard Jenkins, Sharlto Copley, Charlie Day, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. It’s long been pegged as one of my most anticipated movies of next year. And premiering out in Utah at Sundance 2016 next month only confirms my suspicions of its greatness.
The Special Events section at Sundance 2016 features a mixtures of television episodes, short films, and live post-screening Q&As. This year, we’ll be getting the two-hour premiere of Hulu’s Stephen King mini-series, 11.22.63. James Franco leads a great cast that includes Sarah Gadon, Daniel Webber, George MacKay, Josh Duhamel, and Chris Cooper, and it should be a great taster before the full series debuts.
Starz will also debut an impressive four episodes from The Girlfriend Experience. Riley Keough, Paul Sparks, Mary Lynn Rajskub, James Gilbert, and Kate Lyn Sheil lead the anticipated adaptation of Steven Soderbergh’s film.
And co-directors Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson will be on hand for a live Q&A following a screening of their Oscar-buzzed stop-motion animated film, Anomalisa. The film is pegged to be a Best Animated Feature contender during awards season. And it could well sweep up plenty of other awards along the way.
In the Spotlight category, Sundance 2016 will also be celebrating some of the fine talent that has debuted elsewhere on the festival circuit already. Jeremy Saulnier’s brilliant Green Room will be screening, bringing with it a brutal and violent flavour to the festival beyond the Midnight line-up. Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat, Joe Cole, Callum Turner, Mark Webber, and Patrick Stewart are all great in the film, and it’s well worth seeking out. A24 will be releasing it US cinemas and Altitude in UK cinemas a few months after its Park City appearance.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster will also be screening in the Spotlight category. Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz lead the romantic fantasy / dark comedy, and Alchemy will be releasing it stateside sometime next year. Expectations were for a release this year in time for awards season. But evidently Alchemy has other plans.
Sundance 2016 will run from January 21st to January 31st out in Park City, Utah.

Their tragic love story sees the outbreak of the First World War and the world’s struggle for Baku’s oil. Ultimately they must choose to fight for their country’s independence or for each other. Cast: Adam Bakri, Maria Valverde, Mandy Patinkin, Connie Nielsen, Riccardo Scamarcio, Homayoun Ershadi. World Premiere.
Captain Fantastic / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Matt Ross) — Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, a father devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and re-enter society, beginning a journey that challenges his idea of what it means to be a parent. Certain Women / U.S.A.
