Nestled in Warner Brothers announcement about their Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic Con this coming weekend was a little nugget of information that caught us off guard. In their capsule rundowns of the various films they will be promoting, the studio names Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns as the screenwriters for the Wonder Woman film. Which is a bit of a surprise because the last anyone knew Jason Fuchs probably had the job.
Back in April 2015 it was revealed that Warner Brothers had five different writers making pitches to the studio for the Wonder Woman screenwriting job. At the time, Warner Brothers had narrowed down their choices to “Jason Fuchs (Pan) and another writer whose name the studio declines to reveal.” With the IMDB entry for the film picking up Fuchs name, it was just assumed that he had won the job.
Johns, of course, is the Chief Creative Officer for DC Entertainment and is one of the ones overseeing Warners’ big screen DC Extended Universe. He has numerous years as a writer at DC Comics and has penned a number of critically well received and popular series for the comics publisher. He has also written scripts for the CW’s Smallville, The Flash and Arrow live action TV series, as well as the animated Justice League series which ran on Cartoon Network. Heinberg has a resume that sees him primarily working in television, having produced and written for The O.C., Gilmore Girls, Sex And The City, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and The Catch.
This is not the first time that the two have collaborated on a writing project. In fact, their previous work together was a five-issue arc of the JLA comic which featured Wonder Woman as part of the superhero team. Heinberg also wrote his run on the Wonder Woman that was a pretty good read. Given the two’s history with the character, coupled by Johns’ all-encompassing knowledge of the DC Comics universe and what makes its characters tick, I would say that this is a strong indicator that the script is pretty good for this film.
In addition to his work on Wonder Woman, we know that Johns is collaborating with Ben Affleck on the screenplay for the upcoming Batman film Affleck will star in. Johns is also reported to be working on the Shazam superhero adaptation.
