I am super excited to be today’s stop on the RUINS Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. I am in love with the idea the author had to share a timeline of events that lead up to the war with the Partials and I can’t wait to check out all the posts to get the complete timeline.

I only recently got this amazing series on my reading pile, but I fell immediately in love with the characters and world in PARTIALS and am so excited to see just how things end in RUINS when it releases on the 11th. I am just a few short chapters away from finishing FRAGMENTS but I refuse to read them until the day RUINS releases, so that I won’t have to suffer even a short wait if it ends with me hanging off a cliff. I’m just so glad I had FRAGMENTS to pick up immediately.

For those who haven’t yet had the chance to meet Kira and Marcus and to discover this world, now’s the perfect time. The Partials Sequence is insanely good and is a series not be missed. And while the number of pages in each book may seem like a lot, the stories totally fly. These books are not just gorgeous covers. They are action-packed. Riveting. Addictive. Unputdownable.

If the descriptions are not enough to sway you – though I don’t recommend reading any but PARTIALS if you don’t like spoilers – then be sure to check out the author’s timeline guest post below (after you’ve checked out what happened first, which was revealed at Magical Urban Fantasy Reads). It paints a pretty fascinating picture of just how the world devolved into the one Kira lives in.

And if you’d like to get a few other peeks, be sure to watch the very awesome trailers.

This tour runs through March 14th, so be sure to visit all the stops to get the complete timeline of events and to find each “secret word” for an extra entry into the tour-wide giveaways.

Since I’ve rambled on long enough already, I think it’s time to turn the blog over to the author so he can share with you what happened during the years 2036 and 2039. But I will just add that while some of what happens may sound kind of cool, the end result is chilling.

The Timeline

2036

ParaGen creates the first complex, artificial, hybrid life form: the infamous “Fried Chicken Plant,” an engineered breed of corn that grows poultry-like lumps of flesh instead of cobs and kernels, and a combination of oil and thermal catalysts capable of cooking the meat right on the stalk when exposed to direct sunlight. It has little practical viability as a food source (too fragile, no seeds, etc.) but as a proof of concept it is a stunning victory. Biotech turns headfirst into the realm of chimeras and completely artificial creations.

2037

War erupts in the Middle East, involving a number of new chemical and biological weapons. While the war will end abruptly and tragically in just two years, the long-term effects of the bio-weapons will not be fully understood for decades.

2038

ParaGen again leads the way with the creation of a living DRAGON, a house-cat-sized lizard with wings, capable of limited flight. No fire-breathing, but still a towering achievement in the realm of artificial life. They market it as the MyDragon house pet, cornering a market for artificial life before such a market even really existed.

2039

A limited nuclear exchange between autonomous weapon systems (i.e., drones) destroys the Middle East, shocking the world and forcing an almost immediate end to the use of the drones in warfare. This also cripples global oil production, and the remaining world superpowers go on high defense, focusing first on their own sources of oil, and then snapping up other sources scattered around the world: the US opens the Alaskan reserve, Russia seizes Norway, and Brazil seizes Venezuela. China, already ostracized from global culture through their genetic policies, is reticent to trade their own limited resources with others.

About Partials

Series: Partials #1

Author: Dan Wells

Release date: February 28, 2012

Publisher: Balzer + Bray

Pages: 480

Formats: Hardcover, paperback audio, eBook

Description…

The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.

Kira, a sixteen-year-old medic-in-training, is on the front lines of this battle, seeing RM ravage the community while mandatory pregnancy laws have pushed what’s left of humanity to the brink of civil war, and she’s not content to stand by and watch. But as she makes a desperate decision to save the last of her race, she will find that the survival of humans and Partials alike rests in her attempts to uncover the connections between them—connections that humanity has forgotten, or perhaps never even knew were there.

Dan Wells, acclaimed author of I Am Not a Serial Killer, takes readers on a pulsepounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question—one where our humanity is both our greatest liability and our only hope for survival.

Author: Dan Wells

Release date: August 28, 2012

Publisher: Balzer + Bray

Pages: 75

Formats: eBook

Description…

Two decades before the events of Partials, the world was locked in a different battle for survival: a global war for the last remaining oil reserves on the planet. It was for the Isolation War that the American government contracted the ParaGen Corporation to manufacture the Partials—our last hope in reclaiming energy independence from China. And it was on these fields of battle that the seeds of humanity’s eventual destruction were sown.

Isolation takes us back to the front lines of this war, a time when mankind’s ambition far outstripped its foresight. Heron, a newly trained Partial soldier who specializes in infiltration, is sent on a mission deep behind enemy lines. What she discovers there has far-reaching implications—not only for the Isolation War, but for Partials and humans alike long after this war is over.

A powerful take of our world on the brink, Isolation gives readers a glimpse into the history from which Partials was born—as well as clues to where the Partials Sequence is heading next

Her companions are Afa Demoux, an unhinged drifter and former employee of ParaGen, and Samm and Heron, the Partials who betrayed her and saved her life, the only ones who know her secret. But can she trust them?

Meanwhile, back on Long Island, what’s left of humanity is gearing up for war with the Partials, and Marcus knows his only hope is to delay them until Kira returns. But Kira’s journey will take her deep into the overgrown wasteland of postapocalyptic America, and Kira and Marcus both will discover that their greatest enemy may be one they didn’t even know existed.
