7 Reasons to Honeymoon in Matangi

Couples luxuriate in remote Treehouses in the horseshoe-shaped island of Matangi

The horseshoe-shaped bay in Matangi Island has been listed as one of the “1,000 Places to See Before You Die,” and what better place to spend your honeymoon, anniversary, or romantic getaway in than at Matangi Private Island Resort’s little piece of paradise. The resort sits on a family-owned private island of 240 acres of tropical rain forest and white-sand beaches, surrounded by clear blue waters and brightly colored coral reefs.

Here are the top seven reasons you and your significant other should go on a honeymoon in Fiji at Matangi Island Resort.

Memorable wake-up calls

We’ve had one of the most memorable experiences here in all of Fiji because of the staff. A fond memory was the wake-up call by Serelli, the concierge. He gently knocked on our bure door and called us by name. It was the sweetest, most genuine (and personalized) wake-up call we have ever experienced! And that’s just the inherent nature of the Fijians—friendly and caring—it comes second nature to them.

Waking up in a Treehouse

Picture waking up in a beautiful Treehouse Bure with the sound of the waves and the birds chirping in the lush jungle all around you. This is the authentic Fijian paradise that will top off your honeymoon with your significant other. Matangi has only three of this type accommodation, so book early. The Treehouses are 850 square feet and have a private sundeck, an outdoor lava rock shower, an outdoor Jacuzzi, and most importantly, a daily supply of fresh baked cookies and French press coffee. You can’t go wrong with any room at Matangi as they all offer outdoor showers and gorgeous accommodations among the rain forest. Other accommodations include the Beachfront Bure, which has easy access to the beach, and the Oceanfront Bure, which offers a great water view; and there’s even a 1,600-square-foot Two-Bedroom Bure at the end of the resort grounds for families or couples.

Fijian cuisine blending breadfruit, taro, and coconut

Matangi’s cuisine is South Pacific inspired, and effort is made by the chef to include tropical Fijian foods, such as tapioca, taro, breadfruit, Fijian spinach, coconut, fresh fish, and seafood. The Fijian lovo feast, where food is cooked underground using an earth oven, is offered once a week.

Feeling the ocean breeze at Ocean Spa

Matangi’s Ocean Spa opened in 2011. The ocean is reflected in the variety of treatments that they offer as well as in staying true to the traditional Fijian technique. The open-air setting in which you can choose to have a massage is just divine, and the Fijian Bobo massage is one of the best. The native massage, known as the Fijian Bobo, uses organic plants and marine therapies, in combination with the traditional Hands on Healing Massage. Other therapies include the Lava Shell massage, Hot Stone massage, Earth Sea Salt Body Glow, and Coconut Sugar Glow.

Everything has a story

If you talk to the manager and the employees, you’ll quickly learn how much care this local family put into this resort and the land. All of the bures were built from natural local materials, including bamboo, coconut palm thatch, and local hardwoods. Employees can tell you more about how certain designs in the wood were selected.

Activities galore

Go snorkeling with colorful tropical fishes, lounge in hammocks under palms on the beach, or go kayaking around the lagoon. Have the resort organize a romantic picnic for two at the horseshoe bay, or get immersed in the Fijian culture with a visit to the local village.

Dive from Tavoro Falls on Taveuni Island or have a romantic candlelight dinner for two on the overwater deck or a gourmet dinner in the dining bure. There is so much do in and around this amazing resort!

It’s much more than paradise; it’s the people

You have to experience the locals to truly understand. There’s really no other way to describe their generosity and caring nature than to witness it yourself. We’ve had clients go back home in utter shock. They tell us that the first few days, they have their guard up (like Americans ten to do), and what’s wrong with Fijians that they are so friendly? Are they just being nice because it’s their job? Then after the guests settle in, they realize that it’s just Fijians’ nature, and it’s part of their village’s upbringing to be kind and nurturing to all who visit their homeland.

Trust us, you’ll leave genuinely touched by the people.

Getting there

Matangi is an hour and 20-minute flight from Fiji’s Nadi International Airport to the island of Taveuni. Upon arrival to Taveuni Island’s Matei Airport, the car transfer will take you to a boat where you’ll be transferred to Matangi Island.
