The NFL Combine doth descend upon us.

Manti Te'o among players to be grilled at NFL combine
There are few job interviews as intense as NFL scouting combine interviews. Manti Te'o, Tyrann Mathieu and others with red flags are about to learn they're not exactly walking into a corporate board room. Torrey Smith found that out in Indianapolis two years ago.

Cosell’s Take: The evolution of NFL offense | Shutdown Corner - Yahoo! Sports
It has become trendy to talk about the sudden impact of college football on the NFL game. The highly successful utilization of the Pistol formation, and the read option with its multiple concepts has ignited conversations that were unthinkable just a few short years ago. Perhaps no single play crystallized more sharply this new age of NFL football than Colin Kaepernick’s 56 yard touchdown run against the Green Bay Packers in the San Francisco 49ers' NFC Divisional playoff win.

The Shutdown Corner Combine Preview Podcast with Greg Cosell | Shutdown Corner - Yahoo! Sports
With the 2012 NFL season in the books and the pre-draft process underway, it's time to reunite with our old buddy and new collaborator Greg Cosell of NFL FIlms and ESPN's NFL Matchup (as well as Shutdown Corner, in articles you can read here and here). The scouting combine is coming up rught away, and since Greg and I will both be there, along with Shutdown Corner's Brian McIntyre, we thought it would be good to go over the big prospects before the combine shook a few things out. As always, Greg gives you a sense of the process you won't get anywhere else, based on his conversations with players and coaches past and present, and his OCD-level evaluation of coach's tape.

Eagles’ G.M.: Combine won’t do much to change the draft board | ProFootballTalk
"It really shouldn’t change drastically," Roseman said. "I think some of the problems you get into is you get into the Senior Bowl, you get into the Combine and all of a sudden your board changes drastically. It’s got to be back on the tape."

NFL Combine: Intriguing players to watch | National Football Post
Michigan ATH Denard Robinson: The 6-foot, 197-pound former Wolverines quarterback is making the transition to receiver, and it has been a rough one thus far. It will be a long time — if ever — before "Shoelace" becomes a natural pass-catcher, but he needs to be able to put a rough Senior Bowl week behind him. He has all the athleticism in the world, so that bodes well for him moving forward. But his route-running and catching ability need a lot of work. Medical evaluations will also be important for him because he injured his right elbow during the 2012 season and still was not a full-go during the Senior Bowl.

Official Jackson numbers left out signing bonus, incentives | ProFootballTalk
As officially recorded, it’s a one-year, $1.75 million deal with no guaranteed money or incentives. In reality, the deal includes a $500,000 signing bonus (which already has been paid) and incentives that could earn Jackson another $2.25 million, if he takes 65 percent of the snaps on offense.

Swartz: Seahawks Receiver Options " CBS Seattle
Draft a speed-burning youngster. Trade for an explosive play-maker. Sign a proven veteran free-agent? How about a combination of those for the Seattle Seahawks as they look to improve the passing game in 2013 and beyond.

One reason to be wary of pass rusher Paul Kruger? - Blog - MyNorthwest.com
The conclusion I came to was that while Kruger is young and coming off his first contract – like tight end Zach Miller, receiver Sidney Rice and quarterback Matt Flynn, for instance – signing him to a huge deal would be an unprecedented move for a team that hasn't made such a significant commitment to a free-agent defender from another team. And if that trend is by design, it's hard to imagine Seattle going all out for Kruger.

Brock and Salk Blue 42 - Podcasts - MyNorthwest.com
Should the Seahawks take former USC quarterback Matt Barkley if he's available at NO. 25? What does having only one player at the combine say about the state of Washington's football program? What's the latest with disgruntled Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis?

For me, Steadman Bailey and DeAndre Hopkins are competing to be the best receiver in this class. And it’s a close call.

Seahawks "interested" in two off the radar prospects " Seahawks Draft Blog
Take it for what it’s worth- the Seahawks have been connected to two little known small school prospects in the past few days. Seattle showed interest in many players they did not draft last year, and often teams show interest in the players they don’t want, while never talking about the ones they do. They did interview Russell Wilson at the Senior Bowl last year, and there were reports that they showed interest in players like Korey Toomer and Jeremy Lane last year, which was the only reason I even knew enough to mention them before that draft.

Seattle Seahawks Blog - Hawk Blogger: Reggie White & The Seahawks
He is a free agent. His career accomplishments already have him in the Pantheon of the NFL. Few pass rushers have terrorized quarterbacks at the rate he has, but he is going to be 32 next season. Free agents get paid for past performance as much as future, and committing big dollars to defensive end on the wrong side of 30 often leads to a new general manager shortly thereafter. But the lure of supreme pass rushers is like a siren's song. All are drawn to them, but only some avoid the craggy shores. One brave man steered his team through the dangerous waters. His name was Ron Wolf. Another man named Reggie White had 124.0 career sacks when he became a 31-year-old free agent in 1993. Wolf was committed to building through the draft, but went out of character to sign White to a 4 year $17M contract, which was unprecedented for a defensive player at the time. White made Wolf look like a genius by helping the Packers to a Super Bowl title in 1996. John Schneider, a Wolf protege, faces a similar decision this off-season with not one, but two thirty-something decorated pass rushers on the free agent market. History may have more lessons to offer Schneider as he attempts to guide his team past the rocky shores to a championship of his own.

NFL MANNIAC: NFL Running Back ball security (fumble %). Who's the best/worst?
One statistic that I love to evaluate is the fumble, but you can't just look at the fumble itself. To properly evaluate a players ability to protect the football, you must also consider the total number of touches. What you are looking for is the players fumble percentage per touch (fumbles / total touches). This will tell you the rate at which a player fumbles so you can properly evaluate their ability to protect the football. Also, I'm focusing on fumbles, not fumbles lost. The fumble being recovered by the player (or most likely his teammates), has nothing to do with the player's actual ability to protect the football.

Miami (OH) quarterback Zac Dysert was an interesting evaluation this past college football season because he had little help around him, yet he made a plethora of plays. Some good, some bad – that’s just how Dysert is as a passer. And that, understandably, could turn some teams off as they seek their future face of the franchise.
