Taking Dignified Risks and Grow Bold Not Old are two expressions you’ll regularly hear espoused by Feros Care staff.

These are the underlying philosophies of how we encourage our seniors to live.

Living these values, we recently completed extensive trials and implemented a product that gives our residents more independence.

We field tested the M-Care watch with residents in our Wommin Bay and Byron Bay villages. The wearers ranged from very active, to those with dementia. After our successful testing we have now provided the M-Care watch with appropriate residents.

The oversized watch emits a satellite signal every five minutes. The signal is transmitted to a phone app that pinpoints the wearer’s location.

M-Care is our latest tool to allow our residents their independence for much longer, it’s given our Village staff the confidence that our residents will be safe. Residents who might have been excluded from some social outings, or get easily disorientated, now have more freedom.

“Some of our residents have tendencies to wander away from the group when we are on social outings and get confused or lost. Now we are able to quickly find them using the M-Care watch. It gives piece of mind to the carer and the resident knowing they can be easily located,” explained Sarah Marciano Director Residential and Clinical Services.

The watch also has a button that residents can press if they want immediate help or for someone to get them after they have go for a walk.

“One of our Byron Bay residents loves his daily walk around the oval, however he had be his losing confidence and getting nervous as he had started taking the wrong turns. Now he straps on the watch every day and he knows help is at hand if needed.

“You can also talk into the watch, like a miniature mobile phone – that’s why we call it the Maxwell Smart watch,” laughed Sarah.

Residents who were worried about going for a walk and getting lost can now happily take a dignified risk and go for a stroll knowing that help is just one button push away!

An additional advantage of the watch is that we can offer them to people who come to us on respite care.

“We recently had one gentlemen, who although he had dementia was very fit and active. Wearing the watch during his stay with us meant his family had the peace of mind that he was safe, and still enabled him to be able to take regular walks.
