“FC Tucson is proud to continue defining our community as a soccer mecca for every level of the sport,” said the FC Tucson ownership in a join statement. “This is our first foray into the women’s game which has a huge presence through the US National Team, NWSL, USL’s W-League, and the NCAA. We are very grateful to our friends at the Portland Timbers for giving us the opportunity to host the Thorns and their world-class stars Alex Morgan, Rachel Van Hollebeke, Christine Sinclair and reigning FIFA World Player of the Year Nadine Angerer. These matches will invigorate an already rabid Arizona soccer fan base. Add the women’s teams from the University of Arizona and Arizona State University and we think we have a recipe for great crowds and a tremendous energy and atmosphere at these games.”

Portland Thorns FC Head Coach Paul Riley

“The players and staff are tremendously excited for our preseason trip to Tucson. It will give us an opportunity to enjoy a great climate, tremendous facilities and continue our extensive training regimen in preparation for our NWSL title defense. Tucson will provide a wonderful back drop for our team building and it will give local soccer fans the chance to see the Thorns play two preseason games during our stay.”

Arizona Head Coach Tony Amato

“This game is a great opportunity for our team to compete against some of the best players in the world. We are excited to play in the new stadium here in Tucson and believe this will be a great event for the soccer community. I know our players will rise to the occasion and compete at a high level. I want to thank FC Tucson for setting this up and continuing to help showcase soccer in our area.”

Arizona State University Head Coach Kevin Boyd

“Our program is thrilled to play against the NWSL’s Portland Thorns. This will be a great opportunity for our players to test themselves against the very best. As is the case with all of our spring contests, we will take this game and use it as a developmental tool to prepare us for the fall. This will also give us an opportunity to rate some of our players’ readiness to play at the professional level. We are thankful to the Thorns for their willingness to travel to the state of Arizona and to FC Tucson for helping to make this great event happen.”
