If there is one thing that all quilters can agree on, it’s this: quilts take a long time to make. The finished product is almost certainly worth all those hours of sewing–all the cramped fingers, the pin pricks, and the dinners that come out burned because we lose track of time while chain piecing–but no one can deny that sometimes we just don’t have time to make all the beautiful creations we have planned.

Luckily, not everything that’s beautiful (and useful) has to cost a week of your life! I’m a big fan of staggering big projects and little projects to give myself a break between quilts. Have you just finished one of those colossal holiday quilts, and now you’re left with tons of scraps but no willpower to sew them into another big quilt? Give yourself a relaxing little project that you’ll use again and again, but won’t cause you any stress (and won’t cause you to burn the turkey).

To give you some ideas, here are a few of my personal favorite small, fast projects on FaveQuilts.
