Zero toe cleavage and the most sensible of heels, these might be the most man repelling of shoes to have hit the mainstream in a while. And yet I’m a total convert for the humble suede granny shoe…
From Celine’s marmite hoof shoes last season to Chanel’s classic block heel sling-backs, we suddenly want what might once have been considered an ugly shoe twice as much as a pretty stiletto. Celine’s elasticated shoes were one fashion step too far for me, but I’m loving the low-key suede versions hitting the high street right now. These are by Sam Edelman that I got from Need Supply, one of my favourite online haunts when I’m in a minimalist mood, and despite being a good whole size too small (damn you American sizing), I’ve been loving them as an entry point to spring. I’ve never been a massive one for super high heels, so any trend for legitimately wearing dorky mid-heels is one I’m thankful for. Just keep everything else decidedly un-frumpy to keep it modern… Other than that it’s fairly easy to style them in with your usual wardrobe. I like them with a slightly looser ankle, be it a pair of frayed vintage jeans or a small kick flare, and super simple basics like a white tee, striped man’s shirt or oversized cashmere sweater.
