2016 is all about making my wardrobe work better for me, I’m only really adding pieces that enhance other items, and with this I felt like I needed to put together a capsule weekend wardrobe filled with the essentials that can be mixed-and-matched no matter the weather, but would be perfect for my relaxed countryside lifestyle. You see, I love fashion, I love getting dressed up, I even from time-to-time do the power suit, but I do love comfort, which is why I was surprised to see my casual pieces weren’t as strong as the rest of the wardrobe, so Fatface challenged me to put together the ultimate Weekend Wardrobe – pieces that could work for a walk in the woods, an afternoon with my husband on the river, a picnic lunch, a trip to the art gallery, or even for a night out catching up with friends on the terrace of a country pub – basically all the things I love to do during the weekend.
So where would you start to create your ultimate weekend wardrobe?
For me, it’s all about the denim, jeans are really the ultimate staple for any weekend wardrobe, and Fatface does some of the best jeans on the high street. They have some great fits, I’m obsessed with the Twill Jeggings in Nightsky, these beauties are so soft, have just the right amount of stretch, and are super flattering, oh and they literally work with anything – you can dress them up or down. The next essential has to be a pair of Straight Jeans, they are everywhere, I even wore these over fashion week, and I love this vintage wash. Now denim doesn’t just have to mean jeans, Fatface also has a great selection of denim dresses, and the Pinafore Dress is a great alternative, and I love wearing this beauty with an oversized cardigan for the ultimate cosy look.
So once you have the staples it’s time to build on to the look and for the weekend that’s all about the versatile long-sleeve tops, jumpers, shirts and cosy cardigans, with more than one being of the striped variety, I do love how a Bretton tee goes with everything – it can work with the Jeggings, the Straight Jeans and even under the Pinafore Dress. This top seriously is one of my favourite pieces. I know what you’re thinking – did I really need more than one striped top? Well, I think yes, ones more for layering, the other is the dreamiest knit that looks great worn on its own, but I love layering it over this checked shirt **which FYI is now in the sale**. I really do think layering is the key to the ultimate weekend wardrobe.
For added cosiness this Alicia Hoody is perfect, it’s become my favourite thing to wear around the house, I really do wish sometimes that there was technology out there so you could touch the picture and feel how soft this knit is. When wearing out I’ve been pairing it with the denim dress, I love the slouchy vibe, plus it is so warm. It also looks great paired with the Poppy Broderie Popover top, as every weekend wardrobe needs a slightly-smarter white top, and this flattering beauty looks great when worn with the jeggings at night.
So, we’ve checked off jeans and tops, of course with our weather being generally horrid, you are definitely going to need a great coat, and I love my Perth Parka. First off, going for a coat in navy is a great choice, black is so formal I feel sometimes for the weekend, and dark blue works with just as many colours, and getting one that is transformable when the weather gets a little warmer is a great idea. This versatile parka has a denim gilet inside that can be removed, I haven’t yet as I’m still waiting for spring, but it’s only attached with buttons so it will be super easy to switch out when the weather warms up, as well as a removable hood. Next up, I love that it has great pockets, at the weekend I love not having to carry a bag, and these pockets will keep my camera and phone safe, as well as some change. Also, all coats should come with an adjustable waist – I love how you can cinch in your figure.
Last up on creating the perfect weekend outfits has to be the footwear, I already have numerous pair of trainers and ballet flats, and even though I have lots of boots they all seemed to be black or dark hues, perfect for during the week but sometimes a little too smart for the weekend, which is where these Shalford Asymmetric Ankle Boots in Tan come in. These boots work great with blue, as well as black, they are just a great everyday boot, and so comfortable.
Weekend Wardrobe Checklist:
Denim – I probably have too many pairs of jeans, but then again I don’t believe you can ever have too many, but if you are looking to start out – a great skinny pair is essential, as is a straight pair as they are super flattering and perfect for the weekend. Want to add an alternative a denim dress or skirt will work wonders, as will a slouchy boyfriend style, especially when the weather gets a little warmer.
Tops – Stripes, stripes and more stripes. OK, I’m exaggerating, well a little, but they will jazz up any look and as with jeans, you can’t have too many. Also, you can’t make a capsule wardrobe without basic tees, opt for short sleeve and long sleeve in black, white, grey and navy, go for quality and they will last longer.
Shirts – This a new area for me, I’ve never really been a shirt girl, but I discovered with this checked beauty that it looks great layered under a knitted jumper, as well as worn open over the denim dress, especially come summer when it can act as a coat. I also think a white shirt is essential, this will take you from day to night. Also, think about a denim shirt, I love wearing double denim.
Knits – This is an essential area, knitwear is at the heart of a weekend wardrobe for me. Look for pieces that can be easily layered under, as well as slouchy styles that are weekend comfortable. Crewnecks are a given, but also consider roll necks, which look great teamed under the denim dress and under shirts, as well as oversized styles, a smarter cardigan, as well as long cardigan that can be worn as a coat when the weather gets nicer.
Dresses – As well as a denim dress, look out for a simple or printed dress that will be perfect for brunch, as well as suitable for a walk by the river.
Outerwear – A great winter coat is essential, but a coat that’s also versatile, like this Fatface parka with the detachable lining will mean that your coat will be wearable for longer. Also, think about adding a rain coat, a bomber jacket, and a denim jacket, and I always think a camel coat looks great during the week as well as at the weekend in the countryside, and great for the evenings.
Footwear – Get a great pair of boots with a low heel in tan, trust me these boots will be perfect for this trans-seasonal weather. Also, add a neutral pair of trainers, cute ballet flats and a classic black ankle boot.
