All lined up like a little row of library books

There is no designer I can think of who creates narratives with their work quite like Bella Freud. Shrug into one of her ‘Fetish’ jumpers, and you instantly feel like a naughtier version of your normal self. Or pull a ‘Ginsberg is God’ over your head and an intelligentisia sort of transformation ensues. Maybe I need to be wearing a ‘Psychoanalysis’ jumper to write this, but it does fascinate me that a piece of knitwear can evoke a decade- say, the ’1970′s- in an arguably chicer way than flares and a floppy hat could right now.

Given what she can do with word and a divine knit, the launch of Bella Freud parfums is joyful news indeed. The trio are named after three of her best-known slogans; 1970, Je t’aime Jane and Ginsberg is God. Freud worked with ‘nose’ and perfume designer Azzi Glasser to achieve suitably fabulous scents. I love the little stories which go with each one…

Je t’aime Jane is girlish and playful, leaving a trail of delicate intrigue. She is the free spirit with a

guitar, a baby and long bare legs.

Ginsberg is God conjures up the tousled headed poet surrounded by books and papers, the scent of

green leaves and spring drifting in through the open windows.

1970 is the hedonist, the girl dancing until dawn on the beach of Formentera, the smell of incense

in the warm night air.

They are all divine. I’m taking 1970 with me to Ireland this week. It might not be Formentera but with a spritz or two of Freud’s frankincense, myrhh and saffron infused scent,  the coastline at Cahersiveen could feel really rather glamorous.

Bella Freud parfums are available now at Harvey Nichols, £65 for 50ml
