Thirteen years after the Savannah College of Art and Design first opened the SCAD Museum of Art on its Savannah campus, the school is getting ready to unveil another museum at its Atlanta outpost.

When it bows Oct. 1, SCAD FASH, the new 10,000-square-foot museum will consist of a public gallery space, a fashion conservation lab and a media library with an emphasis on film and digital elements. The Atlanta location currently has 27,000 square feet of academic studio space for fashion, fashion marketing and management students at 1600 Peachtree Street. The inaugural exhibition will be devoted to the house of Oscar de la Renta, highlighting the late designer’s work as well as a select assortment from his successor Peter Copping. In February, SCAD presented “Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style,” the first posthumous tribute to the designer, on its main campus.

On Sept. 15, Rizzoli will publish a book by the same title that was written by André Leon Talley, who curated the Savannah exhibition. On Sept. 23, Rizzoli will host a book signing with Talley for the photography-laden 175-page book at its new headquarters, where the windows will spotlight de la Renta’s work.

In Atlanta, SCAD will showcase de la Renta pieces dating back to the mid-Sixties. Former First Lady Laura Bush, Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey are among the high-profile women who have loaned dresses and gowns for the upcoming exhibition. This fall, visitors will also find in the Atlanta galleries “Ovation for Oscar,” the short documentary that premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Created by SCAD alumni and students, the film is a behind-the-scenes look at the advance work that was needed for the Savannah exhibition.

In addition to exhibitions, SCAD FASH will host film screenings and lectures for students and the general public. Visitors will also be able to get a close look at one-of-a-kind designer garments and items from the 1,000-plus items in SCAD’s permanent collection including designs by de la Renta, Yves Saint Laurent and Hubert de Givenchy.

“SCAD FASH celebrates fashion as a universal language and garments as vehicles of identity,” said SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace. “This museum focuses on the past, present and future of fashion design, connecting conceptual to historical principles of dress, whether ceremonial, celebratory or casual.”

Diane von Furstenberg, a champion for the new museum, said, “SCAD is an amazing university because it encourages students to design their own careers and express their own visions. As a continuation of this mission, I am confident that SCAD FASH will inspire students, and all those who visit, to inspire others in turn. It’s all about creating that cycle of empowerment.”

SCAD Museum of Art, which first opened its doors in 2002 but was expanded and relaunched in 2011, attracts more than 40,000 visitors annually. The SCAD Museum of Art has won a 2013 Excellence in Preservation Award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and a 2014 American Institute of Architects National Honor Award for Architecture.

Domenico De Sole, one of the founding donors to the SCAD Museum of Art, said, “SCAD FASH is another example of SCAD’s commitment to fashion for both students and professionals alike. The museum demonstrates how this forward-thinking university continues to execute their vision to provide creative talent to this industry.”

Laurie Ann Farrell, executive director of SCAD museums and exhibitions, is preparing future SCAD FASH shows. “I feel ya: SCAD + André 3000 Benjamin,” and “Art x Fashion.”
