HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

On Tuesday, June 2nd, salons and spas nationwide will offer free services to cancer survivors. The special day, called Cancer Survivor’s Beauty and Support Day, was founded by Highland Park native Barbara Paget.

“I was watching TV and someone who does all the travel information said, ‘Today I’m not going to tell you about traveling, I’m going to tell you about a spa I went to in Northern California where so many of their clients were diagnosed with cancer that they decided to have a spa day’, Paget recalled. “And I looked at the TV and I said, ‘I can do that’.”

More than a decade later, 4300 salons and beauty schools are now participating. But for Paget it isn’t enough.

“My biggest issue is that I need a beauty shop on every corner. I say I want to become a ‘Star Green’, you know, Starbucks and Walgreens, one on every corner.”

Paget has teamed up with Great Clips, Regis, Paul Mitchell, Pivot Point, Empire Beauty School, The Milan Institute and Milady Cosmetology. The list is endless.

Breast cancer survivor Liz Grabscheid booked her first free service years ago at Femme Day Spa in Highland Park. Femme was the first salon to get on board.

“It makes your day, it makes all the other things that you’re going through just go away for that one day,” said Grabscheid.

The salons and beauty schools determine which services they will offer for free. Men, women and children can participate, no matter what type of cancer they’ve battled.

The biggest reward for Grabscheid is walking into a salon of cancer survivors, just like her, and connecting.

“I started to meet other people going through exactly what I was going through and even more. Being able to talk with women and be able to have a conversation about it was so healing,” she said.
