John Doe was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. After graduating from high school, John went on to the United States Naval Academy. He graduated from the Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Shortly afterwards, John married his girlfriend of nearly three years. While at the Naval Academy, he decided to become a helicopter pilot.

After The Basic School, John attended aviation preflight indoctrination at Naval Air Station Pensacola. Afterwards, he went through primary and intermediate flight training. John then attended advanced helicopter flight training. Upon completing flight school, he went on to CH-53E Super Stallion training. After that, John was assigned as a CH-53E pilot to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 (HMH-464) at Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina.

Soon after receiving his commission, John attended aviation preflight indoctrination at Naval Air Station Pensacola. Afterwards, he went through primary and intermediate flight officer training. That was followed by advanced flight training and then EA-6B Prowler training. John was then assigned as an EA-6B Prowler electronic countermeasures officer to Electronic Attack Squadron 133 (VAQ-133) at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

He left the Marine Corps after eight years of service and returned to Indianapolis with his wife and three children. John then obtained employment as a pilot for a private helicopter company. A couple of years later, with his wife's encouragement, he decided to run for Congress. A little over a year later, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives by the voters of Indiana's 5th congressional district.
