According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], Shrewsbury borough had a total area of 2.200 square miles (5.697 km<sup>2</sup>), of which, 2.168 square miles (5.614 km<sup>2</sup>) of it was land and 0.032 square miles (0.083 km<sup>2</sup>) of it (1.45%) of it was water.<ref name=CensusArea/><ref name="GR1" />
Shrewsbury Borough prior to 1926 was a part of Shrewsbury Township, which was much larger in the past and had encompassed several of the other municipalities nearby.

Shrewsbury is governed under the [[Borough (New Jersey)|Borough]] form of New Jersey municipal government. The governing body consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council comprising six council members, with all positions elected [[at-large]] on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office.
