If you’ve been following trends lately, you’ve noticed a bit of a craze about essential oils. And that craze is well founded! Essential oils have been found to have various soothing and refreshing effects on people, and there are countless ways to add the oils and their effects to your day. One of my favorite applications of essential oils is a discreet, fun building block necklace that brings aromatherapy to kids (and those who are kids at heart)
First, head to your local Walmart® store to get your oils and any supplies you don’t have at home.
Supplies:
– Nature’s Bounty® Earthly Elements™ aromatherapy essential oils. Use your favorite of the aromatherapy scents to get the desired effect. My favorite is the lavender, which is soothing, comforting, and provides clarity.
– One bundle or spool of rubber cording from Walmart’s craft section
– One piece of felt, any color
– One mixed box of building blocks. You really only need a 2×6 stud block and a 2×6 stud flat block, so if you have these at home, you’re set!
– A drill, 5/16”, 3/32”, and 1/16” size drill bits
– Needle nose pliers
– Scissors
– A vice or channel lock pliers
Now let’s get to creating! And don’t worry ladies, it’s not as hard as it sounds.
1. Place the larger 2×6 block upside down in the vice or channel locks. Keep it secure, but be careful not to over tighten and bend the block. Do not hold the block with your hands at this step!
2. Using the 5/16” drill bit, carefully and slowly drill out the bottom cylinders. Leave the center cylinder to add stability and grasping power needed in later steps.
3. Grasp any remaining tabs or debris in the block using the needle nose pliers and twist to disconnect and remove them.
4. Turn the block in the vice or pliers so the side is facing up. Drill a hole near the left and right edges with the 3/32” drill bit for the cording. Then drill two holes slightly inward from those using the 1/16” drill bit. Using the same bit, drill a hole on the side on each end of the block. After this step, you can remove the block from the vice or pliers.
5. Measure the cord by holding it loosely around the neck of the intended wearer with the cord meeting where you want the block to rest. Cut the cording an inch longer than this to account for tying the ends.
6. Stick the ends of the cording into the 3/32” holes and tie them into a knot. We found two figure 8 knots to hold the best, as regular knots stretched and pulled through the block occasionally.
7. Cut a strip of felt to the size of the block, then cut it in half. Put the strips inside the block on either side of the center cylinder.
8. Put a few drops of your desired Earthly Elements essential oil on the felt, then put the flat 2×6 block on the bottom of the large block to seal in the felt. Wear the necklace throughout the day, adding drops or changing oils to match or enhance your mood!
So now that you’ve got access to great essential oils at your local Walmart store, what’s your favorite way to use aromatherapy? Do you have a favorite blend of oils that just hits the spot?
