Camping and caravanning is one of the great British pastimes – a popular holiday choice for many of us around the UK. We take a look at some of the great places in Wales that offer the best kids’ and family camping fun for a great holiday.
With campsites all over the country, Wales has so much to offer the tourist – it’s the land of Song and always offers a warm welcome. One of the great things about Wales is that you’ll have no problem understanding the language – English is spoken everywhere (although sometimes it can be difficult to understand the broad Welsh accents!). These are some of the top tourist attractions in Wales and you’re sure to find some great campsites nearby each of them.
Big Pit National Coal Museum, Blaenavon
This is a real coal mine where you can enjoy an authentic Underground Tour taking you deep underground to get a taste of what life was like working at the coal face. The historic colliery buildings above ground boast the Pithead Baths where miners washed away the black coal dust at the end of the shift. This is a useful educational visit for kids who love going down in the cage and wearing the miners’ helmets with their attached lamps.
Castell Coch, Wales
Portmeirion
Created by architect Clough Williams-Ellis over a span of 50 years, the village of Portmeirion is a holiday resort owned and operated by the Second Portmeirion Foundation. The hotel and cottages are Italianate in style and all provide unique luxury accommodation for visitors. Day visitors to Portmeirion will be delighted by this little jewel on the coast of North Wales – the botanical gardens, cute buildings in a rainbow of colours and quirky sculptures will entrance children of all ages. This is a fascinating and enjoyable day out for adults and kids alike.
The Gower, South Wales
The Gower Peninsula with its breathtaking beaches is a great choice for family fun if you have kids. A walk along Rhossili Bay brings you to Worm’s Head, a favourite haunt of Dylan Thomas. Designated are Area of Outstanding National Beauty, visiting the Gower with its tiny villages and thatched cottages is like stepping back in time. You can eat cockles on the beach at Penclawdd (for the gourmets in your party) and the kids will be delighted at the wild ponies that graze on this wild part of Wales
Castell Coch
No trip to Wales would be complete without a visit to a castle and this is the castle that kids like best. Castell Coch is surrounded by woodland, bringing a fairytale atmosphere that will thrill boys and girls alike. With its pointed turrets, this little castle is a Gothic Revival constructed in the 19th Century on top of a genuine 13th Century fortification. The interior is richly decorated with intricate paintings and patterns that will transfix the kids as your family enjoys a tour of this tiny little gem.
