Michael “Mike” Haynes accepted the position of Highway Patrolman for the Fallon County area and has been on the job since October 7. . .Picture: Baker Spartans victorious over Cougars. . .Anita Hayden and Presley Straub are the Spartans of the Week. . . Spartans advance to quarter-finals. The Spartan football team opened the football playoffs with a hard fought 38-18 victory over a very athletic Columbus team Saturday October 28. . .Baker Cub Scouts, Baker Girl Scouts and Gamma Beta Sorority held their annual Halloween Party and Pumpkins Alive Contest at the Fairgrounds October 29. Games were provided by the Scouts for the kids. . .Lower natural gas prices expected this winter. . .The Whichway Quilting Shop, co-owned by Gini Knipfer and Shari Singer, conducts machine quilting classes, and classes are now in session throughout the month. . .Jessica Wagner of Baker, daughter of Jake and Wendy Wagner, brought down a big 6×6 bull elk October 30.  This is her first elk. . .Jake and Wendy Wagner of Baker have purchased the Baker Club from Sheila O’Conner. They took over the business July 1. . . One gallon dairy fresh milk skim or 1% at Reynolds Market $2.19.

Nov. 5 residents of Fallon County will be entering polling places to vote in the 1996 General Election. Local candidates for county commissioner are Allen Rustad, incumbent, and William Duffield, opposing candidate. . .Voting notes: There are 2,037 registered voters in Fallon County, Delilas Herbst holds the record for being the longest continuously registered voter in Fallon County. She first registered to vote June 17, 1937. She is one of nine people who registered in 1937. . .Chelsey Sander, daughter of Wayne and Gaye Sander, competed in the 1996 NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick Eastern Montana sectional at Glendive Oct. 6. Chelsy took first in the 10-11 year old girls with her three scores totaling 135’ 7”. . .Reynolds Supermarket November Employee of the Month is Ken Schell. . .Pigskin Picks Football contest winner last week was Wyatt Uecker. . .Edith Carlson celebrated her 86th birthday Oct. 28.

Dale Boggs, Linda Groshans and Jodie Hoenke invite you to the Insurance Store located in the Bank of Baker starting Nov. 3. . .Groshans Jewelry is having a pre-Christmas sale Thursday – Saturday on all Black Hills gold jewelry. . .A high voter turnout is expected Tuesday for the General Election. Local candidates include: State Representatives – Leo Giacometto vs. Earl Smith; State Senators – James Shaw vs. Hubert Abrams; Commissioners – Delane Beach, Ronald Shepherd, Rodger Myhre and Llewell Johnson; Clerk and Recorder – Mary Lee Dietz, Vera Kuger; Sheriff – Roland “Red” Hickey, Roddy Rost, Leland Gundlach and Gene Hermann, Treasurer – Fay Koenig and Brenda Fadenburgh.

Thursday, Oct. 28, 1976 —

Ismay has a new family on the Jim O’Connell ranch. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Crago, his father and brother bought the ranch and Bruce and Linda will live on it. The Cragos hail from Belle Fourche. . .Mrs. John Weinschrott went to Billings to celebrate her 89th birthday Oct. 24 with all six of her children at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Helen Buzzetti. . .Officers elected at the Fallon County Planning Board meeting were Gordon Quenzer, president; Mylen Bohle, vice president; and Mary Lee Dietz, secretary. . .The fire department building is completely finished on the outside. . . “A European Evening” was enjoyed by people attending the concert last night when seven people touring seven countries gave their impressions of the foreign lands they visited. Miss Linda Meyer, Cindy Uttke, Lori Keirle, Roy Wood, Patti Randash, Terri Anderson and Brenda Culver were the tourists.

Baker Spartans eliminated Circle from the Eastern Class B championship race 45-33 here Friday night. . .Rowland-Thomas Co. of Miles City has purchased the accounting interests of the Baker Accounting Service from Walter Ehman. The local manager Gary Syljuberget, moved from his Harriet Street office to the former Ehman office. . .Gene Huntley, Glenn Rugg, Art Meccage and Arnold Falkenstern, candidates for the Montana State Legislature, were members of a panel to discuss problems of education in Montana at Terry, Nov. 1. . .Harvey Kile has again donated three steers to the Fallon Creek Cowbelles which have been sold and the money will be used for their tourist kits.

Thursday, Nov. 1, 1956 —

New cars for 1957 are making their appearance in Baker and Fallon County and all are equipped with plenty of horses, new lines and beauty. . .Leo Riddle, secretary of the Baker Men’s Club, stated Wednesday that at a meeting of the board of directors, Martin Tommerdahl, long time member and a wheel in the club’s affairs agreed to accept management of the club and bar in Baker. . .Sunday afternoon the 4-H leader delegation from Fallon and Carter Counties left for Billings to attend a 4-H district leaders conference. Those attending from Fallon and Carter Counties were Roger Nies, Folas Lurch, Harry Logar and Lee Rovig, county agent-at-large. . .Joe Steffes, Jr., owner of the local Gamble Store, announces their fifth anniversary sale starting today. . .Postmaster Carl Lentz, says he has word of several bids being presented for a new post office building for Baker.

Thursday, Oct. 31, 1946 —

The Kit Kat Klub opened Oct. 25. Proprietors, Vera and Bill Campbell, advertise lunches, ice cream and dancing with no cover change or dance fee. Primarily operated for teenagers. . .Mr. and Mrs. Fred Eswald and children plan to leave this week for their new home in Pillager, Minn. They have sold their farm north of Westmore where they have lived the past 21 years. . .Sheep men are a weary lot at least those expecting to ship stock a week ago. There are a dozen bands camped on the way to Baker. Harold Patton of Mill Iron gave up the other day and hooked a tractor onto his truck and came into Baker to wait until the weather cleared up. While the highways are passable, side roads are bogged down with snow and slush everywhere. 1.04 inches of moisture was reported for the week. . .Charles Hayes spent the weekend in the Twin Cities and had a get-together with former classmates Marilyn Weeks, Jeanette Venell and Rosemary Pleissner, all are attending college. . .Mrs. A. W. Callen is manager of the Bagley Elevator.

Thursday, Nov. 5, 1936 —

A special meeting of the board of trustees of District 12 was held at the high school to open bids for building a new addition on the high school building. Gaton & Co. of Billings were low bidders and were awarded the contract amounting to $228,681. . .Guy Wilson, employee at the local Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., was promoted to managership at Shelby. The Wilsons sold their residence to John Wild. . .The marriage of Miss Irene Myhre, daughter of Odin Myhre of Baker, and Max Hansen of Cresbard, S.D., took place in Baker Saturday afternoon. The ceremony took place at the home of the bride’s sister, Mrs. Elmer Newell, Rev. J. E. Nelson officiated.

Thursday, Nov. 4, 1926 —

Thirty-five Montana counties reduce levies in 1926. Fallon County leads with a reduction of 8.25 mills. . .Undersheriff Frankland and C. O. Wright went to Miles City Thursday where the undersheriff had his wounded arm examined. Doctors said it would be some time before his arm would heal as there were several bullets imbedded which would have to work out. . .Among Baker people who attended the Powder River bridge celebration Sunday were J. O. Christophers, the Burrells, Grants, Hills, Proctors, L. E. Bakers, Dr. Pottertons and Bob Yokley families. Talks were given by R. Nelstad, Miles City; C. C. Ayers, Ismay, Pickering of Ekalaka; Wm. Tope, Terry; V. S. Himsl of Plevna; and Denzil Young of Baker.
