This week’s [optional] theme for the Fit Dish link up (hosted by Jill Conyers @ JillConyers.com, & Jessica Joy @ TheFitSwitch.org) is on…the 5 People I Want To Train With/Learn From!

Hi everyone! I am alive and well in WV and just started my elective FM rotation in about 6 hours! People are super nice, and the hospital’s ginormous, so I get a whole lot of walking in! :] It’s also been awesome seeing friends and having a roommate again! :] We have similar loves for healthy food, and hooray for a built-in at-home workout buddy!

This topic was somewhat of a hard one, mostly because I like so many different things. ._.

I love powerlifting, but I don’t know that there’s anyone out there that I really super-want to train with/learn from, because it’s always been such a solitary activity for me.

So…I decided to focus on dancing and MMA instead. <3

My list started off with actual people, two of which I’ve actually had the chance to learn from and/or train with, but I veered off with the last two on just things I’d really love to do again someday, because…weird as it may sound/seem, I don’t actually know of all that many fitness legends out there.

Bel Jeremiah of Twirly Girls Pole Fitness

I’ve been incredibly blessed to have gotten to know, learn from, and work with Bel. (More accurately, I was practically a studio fixture for the summer of 2011. <3 ) I honestly couldn’t have found a better place to start learning pole dancing, and I miss her so much! I’ve already talked at length about how much I love Bel (she’s like another mother to me! <3) and my very first fitfam: Twirly Girls Pole Fitness (here’s my review of the studio!).

Bel is supportive, encouraging, strong, inspiring, and just so considerate and giving that you can’t help but want to make her proud, and to wish for all the good things ever to come her way. <3

Relson Gracie

I’ve gotten to take two seminars with him thus far (and if you haven’t read one of my more recent posts, he offered me a job at the last one!)! He’s a 9th-degree red belt (aka grandmaster/highest rank you can possibly get to), and went 22 years undefeated as the BJJ National Champion. [insert super-fangirling here]

Relson is really nice and super chill, and I’ve learned a lot from the two seminars I’ve taken with him. I also really appreciated the fact that he likes to emphasize street-smart self-defense and different effective techniques that work really well, even when the person you’re up against is at least twice your size.

Natasha Wang

I missed out on her workshop at Twirly Girls! :[ If I recall correctly, it was while I was out in New Jersey for grad school. I was pretty devastated, but maybe someday! ;_; She is so pretty and graceful, and my friends at TG say she’s really down-to-earth, and that they learned a lot!

I want to join a halau!

This obviously isn’t a specific person, but I joined Na Keiki ‘O Hawai’i (a Polynesian cultural dance group) in my freshman year of undergrad, and completely fell in love. <3 It was my first real exposure to dancing, and my only form of exercise for my first two years of college. (I learned how to lift weights and be a total badass in my junior year! :D!)

I miss my NKOH ohana a lot, and I really miss dancing, so much so that I kinda coerced the school to let me officially teach beginning hula/Tahitian classes in the gym last year. We performed at our school’s International Festival and Follies to earn money for the international service trip + the domestic violence shelter. Wherever it is that I end up, I’d really love to find a halau somewhere so that I can start dancing again! We’ll not mention the fact that lately, I’ve been putting some serious thought on moving to rural Hawai’i if that program will take me. >_>

Aerial Arts!

Also not a straight-up person, but…I want to find a place to train in aerial arts! My friend brought in her silks and rigged it up so that I could play around on them on my last morning of living in CA before I moved across the country for grad school. <3 I also got to take one aerial hoop (lyra) class at Body & Pole while I was living in New Jersey (I took the train up to NYC during spring break)!

I’ve only gotten to take maybe a handful of classes since then (hooray for winter breaks, back when they existed!), so I’m fairly certain I’ve forgotten everything, but I fully plan to rig up my own silks in my future house. It’s super fun, and kindasorta goes hand in hand with pole (although I haven’t decided yet on a preference between silk-burn vs. pole-burn; they both kinda suck).

How I spent my last morning in CA.

This was my third class, so please don’t mind my form. ._.

And…while I’m dreaming, I’d also love to learn how to be amazing at salsa dancing! <3
