He hasn’t just written books and cashed his massive checks, though, he spends a good deal of time trying to dispel many of the myths about self-publishing. Those myths are generally propagated by the denizens of Traditional Publishing.
He’s just posted a new article looking at lots and lots of data. I love data. Here
It’s rather long so I won’t try to go over it in too much detail, but he shows (with pretty graphs) how much better Indie Publishers/Authors are doing than their Traditional Published counterparts. In fact, it isn’t even close.
One of the points he makes, which I thought was interesting, was that the average rating on Indie Published books was two tenths higher than the lowest group they measured, the Big Five. Conversely, the average price for the Big Five was over seven dollars while the lowest average price was on the Indie Published books, at just over $3.00. This data was taken from the best seller lists and in most cases represents books with over 100 reviews/ratings.
He hypothesized that there seems to be a strong correlation between price and perceived value. I would agree. Readers may not consciously consider how much they paid, but may know that the mystery they just bought from Brian D. Meeks was much less than the one they bought from big whig publisher and they enjoyed it just the same. $2.99 – $5.99 is a better deal than $12.99 and maybe that causes them to be more generous with the stars?
It’s a long article, but if one is interested in the book publishing business, then it is a must read.

In other news I’ve been doing a bunch of guest post writing of late. I banged out another 1200 word post today and it’s pretty good. That makes three in the last week, over 3500 words, and they are all going to run on the 18th, which is when I’m running my next Henry Wood Detective Agency promotion.
