CLARION, Pa. - The Clarion University Athletic Department is honoring 164 student-athletes (47%) today, while the NCAA marks its 27th celebration of National Student Athlete Day on Sunday, April 6, 2014.

The NCAA honors student athletes who have achieved a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in their careers.

Counting each student-athlete only once, even if they participate in multiple sports, the Golden Eagles have 164 student athletes with a current cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher – out of 349 total student athletes. That means 47% of Clarion’s student-athletes will receive NCAA honors since they are maintaining a 3.0 or above grade point average.

“We are very proud of our student-athletes in the classroom and on the athletic field of play,” said Clarion Athletic Director Dave Katis. “Our main mission is to prepare our student-athletes for their academic careers. We are blessed to have quality student-athletes, coaches, faculty and administrators help our student-athletes reach those goals.”

The National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports and Northeastern University’s Sport In Society. It is co-sponsored with the NCAA and the National Federation of State high School Associations.
