Besides Salted Egg, the next favorite food that would drive me crazy is probably Shibuya Toasts/ or thick toasts. So, when a little bird told me that Tuk Tuk Cha was serving up their version of Shibuya Thick Toast, I immediately rushed down after school to have a taste of it.

The Place

As it was my first visit to Tuk Tuk Cha, I was surprised at how small the unit occupied. Situated in one of the open spaces on the second level, opposite Coffee Bean, and amongst with the cluster of food kiosks, it would be pretty easy to miss them if you’re not alert!

What makes Tuk Tuk Cha stands out from the other stores in the area is this life sized tuk tuk parked at the entrance of their store. So keep a look out for that!

The Menu
All the main ingredients in their food, including the shibuya toast are sourced directly from Thailand. Now, that’s authenticity at its best! As they are in the open space, Tuk Tuk Cha do not serve any mains as they are not allowed to have stoves in the open kitchen/counter. Their variety of food tend to be more of the take away concept and lighter options!

All they have is their trusty toaster and air fryer, which is genius because it seems to work for them VERY WELL.

The Food
I’ve heard about how good their Thai Milk Tea is! However, as I was tired as usual, I decided to get their Thai Milk Coffee ($3.20). If you like your coffee GAO (thick), this is gonna be gao enough for you. DAMN GAO, and really shiok. Although I thought it felt like there was an overdose in condensed milk in there, so it made me feel
a little
very conscious, because I’m quite anal about the amount of condensed milk in my coffee. Nevertheless, if you don’t really care, this is one very shiok cup of coffee.

Tom Yam Toast (Chicken Floss + Egg Omelette): $2.50 + $1. The combination of both chicken floss and egg omelette will cost you a dollar more than just getting one of the fillings, but I highly recommend a mix!

I LOVED the different textures within this toastie. The slight chewiness and savoriness of the floss, and the silky smooth omelette, together with the spicy kick of the tom yam, YUM. I liked this a lot.

On to the Shibuya Toast, which took quite a while to arrive because of the air frying process! So be patient guys! Aloha Coconut ($10.80) – Topped with a scoop of coconut ice cream, young coconut flesh and shredded coconut. For any coconut lover, this would make you swoon over the generous amounts of delicious coconut and its fragrance.

The toast felt a little too crusty to cut into initially. However, after a really short while after the ice cream has melted a little, everything went uphill from there. Crisp exterior, with buttery soft, fluffy interior. Was I at After You? Oh my gosh. Deja Vu. It’s been a while since I’ve had such a good shibuya toast in Singapore!

The owner actually went to ALL the cafes serving thick toast to try them, just to make sure that she has got all the components right, and make sure that she does it better than them. And I guess it’s safe to say that, she did.

I loved the Aloha Coconut because of its unique flavor, as well as the fresh toppings! They got their coconut directly from Thailand too! Very good, very, very good. I cannot.  Mango Tango ($10.80) – This was the mango version of the thick toast. Fresh mango cubes topping the buttery toast.

This did not fare as well as the former maybe because the mango and toast component felt like separate entities -Mango and Toast. We wished there were some mango sauce of some sort to bring in the harmony in this dish, which would definitely send all the mango lovers squealing in delight!

Closing Remarks

I was actually pretty impressed with all the items I had at Tuk Tuk Cha. It was a pity that they are not able to serve any mains because of the restrictions on their kitchen, otherwise it would have been my favorite to-go place for thai food!

Besides the limited seating capacity, I really had no other qualms about this place. I loved the sincerity of the owner and the amount of passion she puts into perfecting the recipe of her dishes! She is very receptive to feedback too! This thick toast is probably the best I’ve had so far here in Singapore, and let’s hope that they will keep reinventing new flavors and keep the standards up!
