There are different types of breast surgeries which help in resolving health or aesthetic issues. Breast augmentation in New York is done by putting breast implants either under or over the muscle in the chest; the implants are used to increase the size of the natural breast or to correct unevenness of the breasts. A second type of breast surgery is breast reduction. This surgery is done to make the breasts smaller, either one or both depending on whether the issue is unevenness or a woman being uncomfortable with her natural state. A breast lift is surgery designed to correcting sagging breasts and lastly, breast reconstruction is surgery that is performed after a mastectomy.

By far the most popular of the four different surgeries is breast augmentation in New York. To the cosmetic surgeon this procedure is called a mammaplasty, it is accomplished by inserting a bag either behind or on top of the pectoral muscle, in the case of a saline implant; the bag is filled after insertion; if the implant is silicone it is prefilled prior to insertion.

Many women are simply not comfortable with the natural size and shape of their breasts so the procedure is done for aesthetic purposes. Not only can breast implants be used to increase breast size, they can be used to correct differences in the size of the breasts.

Just as there are women who are unhappy about their breasts being small, there are women who are equally unhappy about their breasts being too large. Overly large breasts can make a woman either physically or emotionally uncomfortable. Breast reduction is a surgical procedure where tissue is removed from the breast and the skin is tightened over the tissue that remains.

A breast lift or mastopexy is a very common procedure carried out by cosmetic surgeons as many women are naturally predisposed to sagging breasts or have had children. In this type of surgery, skin from the top of the breast is lifted up and then reattached. Depending on the extent of the breast lift, the nipple can also be relocated for a more natural appearance.

There are many cases where a woman, due to breast cancer has had to have one or both breasts removed. In cases like this many women choose to undergo breast reconstruction and have implants. This is a more complicated form of breast surgery than the others as there is usually a lack of skin to cover the implants; this results in skin grafts having to be taken from other parts of the body, in many cases the abdomen.
