Benefit from Interval Training at Any Age

Interval training is all the rage right now, and for good reason. Regardless of your age orgoals, there are a ton of benefits that can come from interval training. Interval training is the process of performing spurts of high intensity work with moderate intensity. Sets of sprints that are broken up by jogging is an example of a very simple type of interval training.

The reason interval training is so effective is because it burns calories and gets your metabolism roaring. When you perform low intensity workouts, your metabolism slows down to a normal speed soon after your workout. With high intensity interval training, on the other hand, your metabolism stays high and you will continue to burn calories throughout the day. Here are two great ways to perform interval training:

Fat Burning Interval Training

Most people perform interval training to lose weight and burn fat. For this goal, nothing could be a better workout. You can add some weightlifting into your fat burning interval training regimen if you prefer, but most people like to do some sort of aerobic activity. Choose a form of aerobic exercise, whether it be running, swimming, rowing, or something else.

Perform sets of high intensity work that last about 30 seconds, then slow down to a moderate intensity for two or three times that length. If you are rowing, for example, row as hard as you can for 30 seconds. Once exhausted, cool down a bit with a normal rowing pace before picking it up again.

Muscle Building Interval Training

Many people like to lift weights as part of their interval training because it can build muscle and burn fat at the same time. Actually, interval training with weights has proven to grow muscle just as well as traditional, moderate intensity weight training.

To perform this sort of interval training, choose five exercises you want to perform. These exercises should typically utilize a lot of muscles, so stick to the basics. Squats, pullups, deadlifts, bench presses, lunges, and so on are all great choices because they are difficult and force you to expend a lot of energy. Perform a set of each exercise, resting as little as possible between sets.

Anything more than about 30 seconds is too much. Since weight lifting is incredibly taxing on the body, you don’t need to perform any sort of exercise between sets. If you lower the weight to make sets a bit easier, however, you can do a low intensity move between sets, such as jumping jacks.

Ultimately, high intensity interval training is a great way to get in shape. Whether you want to burn fat, gain muscle, or increase your cardiovascular endurance, interval training is the way to go.
