EastEnders fans are slightly baffled by Sonia Fowler’s decision to move to the Northampton town of Kettering.

Sonia, who is a nurse, has been warbling on about the new job opportunity in private healthcare on offer in the town.

Her exit from the soap comes as a result of actress Natalie Cassidy taking maternity leave, but the storyline has left viewers less than impressed. They took to Twitter to air their grievances with some hilarious results.

‘Is Kettering council paying #EastEnders to say “Kettering” a million times?’ one person sarcastically tweeted.

Another wrote: ‘Sonia from Eastenders leaving to work in Kettering? Where is she going to work? The Weetabix factory?’

‘Kettering being mentioned on Eastenders is the biggest thing to happen to that town in about 14 years,’ commented a fourth user.

However, it’s not the first time Kettering – i.e. the most average town in all the kingdom – has found itself unwittingly in the eye of a media storm.

Lindsay Lohan directed a scathing tweet at it’s 67,000 inhabitants, when it emerged that the east midlands town had voted to leave the EU, demanding to know where the town was.

First Lindsay Lohan, then Sonia. 2016 has been quite the year for Kettering

I'm hoping Sonia goes to see Lindsay Lohan turning on the Christmas lights in Kettering. #EastEnders

An enraged backbencher, Tory Philip Hollobone, took to the social media platform to blast the actress for daring to critique his hometown and invited her to visit.

Hollobone raged: ‘Apart from the fact that it might be the most average town in the country, everyone knows where Kettering is.’

‘It is famous as the home of Weetabix breakfast cereal, and Cheaney and Loake shoes, and Kettering Town football club has scored more goals in the history of the FA Cup than any other football team in the country.’

Hollobone finished his rant by suggesting that Lohan should switch on Kettering’s Christmas lights this year to ‘redeem’ herself, an offer she subsequently accepted.

At least nurse Sonia will be on hand if there are any medical emergencies.
