It seems like every other day that a flight is diverted to Shannon Airport, and yesterday the Co Clare airport dealt with two emergency landings just minutes apart.

Both flights declared medical emergencies and safely landed within twenty minutes of each other, reports the Irish Mirror.

KLM flight 686 was travelling from Mexico to Amsterdam when the crew requested permission to divert to the nearest suitable airport as a passenger had become ill.

The flight safely landed at 1.29pm to waiting paramedics.

Less than 30 minutes later a United Airlines flight travelling from Brussels to Washington that was about 300 kilometres west of Kerry was forced to turn around due to a medical emergency.

The crew of the Boeing 777-200 jet had to dump aviation fuel to ensure they touched down within safe landing weight limits and it landed at 1.46pm.

Both patients were transported to University Hospital Limerick for treatment and their conditions are unknown.

This year so far, the airport has dealt with almost 40 diversions half of which have been medical diversions.
