4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Visiting Cambridge, MA, scholar, curator, and archivist, Jeffrey B. Spurr will speak about the historical role of libraries in cultural preservation and the losses they sustain during times of ravaging conflict. From his partnership with the Sabre Foundation, he will recount how, following acts of arson during the rule of Saddam Hussein, the devastated Iraq National Library and Archive was revived as a model for any well-governed institution.
Spurr is Middle East and Islamic Specialist (retired) at the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture, Harvard University's Fine Arts Library. He also founded and managed the Bosnia Library Project (1996-2005).
