The brainchild of artists Juliet Rosser and Sam Mitchell-Fin, Platform opened in 2012, with the intention of giving local artists the opportunity to experiment in a commercial space.
Part gallery, part retail store, Platform gives artists a commercial testing ground or launch pad to connect with their community and their buyers and in just two years, Platform has cemented a unique place in Sydney’s evolving art scene.
With two different sites – Platform72 in Darlinghurst and Platform Central Park in Chippendale – the spaces serve as multiple functions: as a curated art gallery, artist space, artist’s studio and design store.
Changing daily, visitors can expect to see paintings, sculptures, drawings, photography and a range of design objects created by emerging artists, designers, craftsman and makers.
Opening Thursday April 10, Art For Small Spaces is an affordable group show featuring over 40 artists. Encouraging art lovers to start their collection at an affordable price, all the artworks are valued under $500.
Featuring painting, sculpture, photography and limited edition prints, these pieces are ideal for people who are either on a budget or live or work in small spaces.
Some of the artists exhibiting include Sarah Howell, Dylan Demarchi, David Kurzydlo, Marnie Ross and Miriam Montgomery.
Unlike traditional exhibitions, Art For Small Spaces allows you to take home, on the spot, the artwork that you purchase on the night. The curator Juliet Rosser says the Platform team will continuously update the artworks once they have been sold, creating an exciting rotating exhibition.
“It’s quite crazy and fun,” says Rosser, who hosted a similar exhibition last year. “Because you’re running around the whole night, putting up different things on the walls. It’s a really dynamic exhibition.”
After the two nights, Art For Small Spaces will have an online gallery show where buyers have the opportunity to purchase affordable artwork online.
