The founder of Haus Interior, Nina Freudenberger opened the flagship retail store in Nolita, New York City in 2009 and is soon to re-open the second retail store in Los Angeles. While Nina and her team are busy re-opening the LA store and working on her signature chic interior design projects they have also somehow managed to release their first in-house designed range of candles.
We asked Nina takes us through the home journey from front to back to gain insight into the evolution of the Haus Interior design hub.

Tell us a little about your journey – how Haus Interior began, who is in your team, and how has it evolved into a successful design studio with two supporting stores?
It has been quite a journey! Haus Interior started when I ventured out on my own and started taking on private design clients. After getting my footing for about 2 years, I decided I wanted to also find a way to support young, up-and-coming designers that I was coming across, and thought the best way to do this was in a retail format. Coming from the art school RISD, there is something tangible that I was looking to express. I was lucky enough to find the space in the heart of Nolita and it all materialized from there. I am lucky enough to have an incredible creative team surrounding me, Bryn Schuyler who is the creative director at Haus Interior (and one of my greatest friends) and Meghan Angliss, who manages the retail shop. It’s so important to work with people you both admire creatively and can challenge you.
Can you define your design aesthetic?
My personal design aesthetic is a mix of modern, clean, architectural lines with warm, natural materials. I love graphics, patterns and layering textures while keeping the color palette neutral and soft.
What is a typical day in the life of the team behind Haus Interior?
It’s always something new! I work from Venice, California and my team is in NYC, I go back and forth as we have projects on both coasts. We usually have a conference call once a day to check in on the day’s events, but sometimes we are all just working away on our own individual projects. Our days include site visits, client meetings, fabric & wallpaper showroom visits, studio tours, etc. Never a dull moment with us!
What has been your favorite project to date?
I think you have to fall in love with each project a little to really make it a success, so I truly can’t choose! Generally speaking, it is always the best when we get a project and the client has a very strong aesthetic point of view. The challenge that it provides always sharpens my skills and my eye.
Where do you turn for inspiration, and to keep you in the know?
I love taking a bit of time each week to take a look at my favorite design blogs and places such as Pinterest. There is so much information out there it can often be overwhelming, so I really try to set aside a bit of time so I’m not rushed and I can “wander” without a particular goal. I often find new resources, vendors and artists this way!
What are you working on at the moment?
We are working on a few things, 2 homes in LA, homes in the Hamptons and in NYC. We are also gearing up for the Spring/Summer collection at the shop, as well as introducing 4 new scents for our candle line – which is our first product designed in-house.
What does the future hold?
Hopefully many exciting things! I hope to continue growing the interior design business as well as expanding our own product line of candles and beyond. I would love to do collaborations with boutique hotel brand.
What are you loving at the moment?
Traveling! In the last year I’ve been to Morocco, South Africa, Japan, Sayulita and Tulum, Mexico. I live to travel, each place has a new perspective and I love exploring local crafts and design.
When your not hard at work where do you hang out in Nolita?
My shop is a place where all my friends know to find me, so someone is always stopping by! If not, the Musket Room for cocktails, Butchers Daughter for a healthy lunch and Bowery Hotel for a glass of wine in their garden.
