NTU, the Ukrainian national broadcaster has revealed today that Florian Wieder will develop stage design for the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv.
Florian Wieder has become the stage designer of the Eurovision Song Contest to be held in the capital of Ukraine in spring 2017. This is the fourth stage that he develops for the international song contest. Florian Wieder’s portfolio includes the Eurovision stages in Dusseldorf, Baku and Vienna, as well as such projects as The X-Factor talent show in Great Britain and the USA, and MTV Video Music Awards.
Florian says:
I love the idea behind Eurovision Song Contest. So many different countries and cultures come together in peace to celebrate this event that’s what truly excites me. The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the most exciting projects of my career. There are only a few like this in the world, so it is a huge honor for me to be the designer for this years show in Kyiv.
My goal is to bring happiness and excitement for everyone involved. I’ve planned to incorporate some entirely new features which I will be kept as a surprise until the show. The design for 2017 will be unique and divergent to the previous shows. ESC is not only a passion project for me, but also a creative challenge, one that is immensely inspiring for me as a designer.
The pitch for the song contest stage concept was held by the National Television Company of Ukraine starting from November. Following the analysis of the relevant service market, invitations to participate in the Eurovision 2017 stage design ideas selection were sent to the best production designers.
Eventually, NTU received pitch proposals from four companies, two Ukrainian – Zinteco and Artmax, and two foreign – Wieder Design and Kuby Design. These are professional designers with many years of experience in technical support of various shows. The main selection criteria were uniqueness and creativity of the ESC stage arrangement idea.
As a result, the Eurovision team has selected the stage concept which will best fulfill the tasks of Eurovision. The decision has been approved by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
The respective agreement with Wieder Design has already been signed.
Ms. Victoria Romanova (ESC 2017 Executive Producer) says:
The stage is one of the most important elements of the show. Viewers’ impressions about the contest depend on its look and functionality. Therefore, we have engaged the world’s best experts to develop the stage design.
The stage design itself will be made public in February. Traditionally, it is presented in the year of the contest.
Moreover, the National Television Company has entered into all necessary agreements with the Eurovision 2017 main venue – the International Exhibition Center. The stage and grandstands construction will start at the IEC in late March 2017.
The International Exhibition Centre is the largest exhibition building in Ukraine. Its architectural complex consists of three halls with the total area of 58,000 square meters. IEC premises comply with all technical safety requirements; the complex has a modern ventilation and air conditioning system, 15 conference rooms, a press centre, restaurants and cafes.
As a reminder, the capital city of Ukraine will host the 62nd Eurovision Song Contest in spring. 43 countries have confirmed their participation in the Contest. Such a record number of participants repeated only twice in the history of the Eurovision back in 2008 and 2011. Victoria Romanova and Oleksandr Kharebin have been approved as the Eurovision 2017 Executive Producers.
The Eurovision Song Contest will be returning to the majestic Ukrainian capital for the 2nd time in Eurovision history.
The 2017 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to be held on 9, 11 and 13 May at the IEC in Kyiv, Ukraine
