In the lead up to the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Sony did a number of great initiatives, one being engaging numerous indie developers and advertising them as not just a side project of consoles, but one of the main reasons to own a PS4. Even after the release of the PS4, Sony has shown their commitment to the indie scene and established themselves as the indie box (a term which has good and bad connotations), a place for not only for AAA experiences, but for interesting and unique games from independent developers.
However, for as many games we are excited for, we are continuously left waiting for more details and or release dates. But with the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) just around the corner, we are hoping to learn a lot more about some of our most anticipated indie PS4 exclusives we having been waiting years for. Here’ s are our Top 5 PS4 Exclusives we can’t wait to hear more about at E3 2015.
Rime
The delightful and bright Rime excited fans back in 2013, but will we see any new game play for the title this year?
From the Spanish developers, Tequila Works, comes the colourful and interesting game, Rime. Although, we have not heard much about the project since its initial announcement, it caught the attention of the gaming community back in 2013, premiering at the Sony E3 press conference. The simple exploration and whimsical feel just from watching the reveal trailer made many oooh and awww at the gameplay and visuals, and left us wanting to explore the expansive and mysterious landscapes of this unnamed island. It was one of the first indie titles which got fans excited in the lead up to the launch of the PS4, and hopefully we will see more of it this year.
An adventure, exploration game with puzzle solving elements and some supernatural events occurring around the island, it’s a place ripe for exploring. Its one we can’t wait to hear more about, let’s just hope it doesn’t go the way of ‘The Guardian’ in regards to disappearing from the public from years and years on end.
SOMA
Another horror game from the creators of the Amnesia franchise is set to make us wet our pants all over again.
A horror game we have already covered extensively here at OnlySP and for good reason. A scary and dark sci-fi horror coming to PS4 and PC, set to make even the bravest cry and be disturbed. The story takes place on a remote research facility called PATHOS-2 where machines have taken on the traits of humans, while alien life has started to turn the facility into a nightmare. Sounds fun, right? Brought to us from Frictional Games, the developers who created the frightfully scary Amnesia: The Dark Descent, there is sure to be some jumps scares and twisted monsters for players to avoid.
SOMA is set to come out sometime this year, with the game already having been put into beta and a release date set to be announced soon. Originally announced back in 2013 with little bits of information and screenshots released since, we are still waiting on some more concrete information on the story and some of the gameplay elements. It’s a strange time when we want to see more of a game because we are interested, but we don’t at the same time because we don’t want it spoiled. Regardless of what we want, we’re sure there will be some new announcements for it at E3.
Everybody’s gone to the Rapture
Exploring the British countryside during the apocalypse, sounds like fun right?
Another adventure, exploration game which has caught our interest, is the post-apocalyptic, yet very English and simple Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. From the creators of the well-known Dear Esther, which was lauded for its story telling and environments, this looks very similar with an interesting setting and story elements to learn about. The game is based around six different characters, who all tell a different side of the events taking place in the village of Shropshire during the apocalypse.
With so many apocalyptic games and franchises around, it’s nice to see a developer take a different approach and explore the more immediate effect on the populace from the apocalypse. The developer has been fairly open about the development, but being able to see some more gameplay and maybe even a release date for the PS4 exclusive at E3 would make a lot of single player gamers happy.
Until Dawn (Not Really Indie)
Teen horror with terrible decisions ending with all your characters possibly dead? Sign me up!
Another intense horror game, which initially was set to be released on PlayStation 3, but has since been recreated for the PS4, is one to keep an eye on at E3. Although featuring a somewhat simple premise, with a bunch of friends out in a cabin alone with a serial killer coming for them, it is looking to immerse players to a new level, and place some tough decisions in their hands. The “Butterfly Effect” is an important mechanic towards determining the outcome of the story, as player’s actions and decisions with one character, will effect the paths and events for others.
A similar example for the gameplay and story structure is the fantastic Heavy Rain, which would allow for all the playable characters to die and thus influence the story dramatically. Until Dawn is no exception to this game mechanic, with all eight playable characters having the possibility of death. We can’t wait to see more of Until Dawn at E3, with the gameplay already shown being gripping and hectic with some great visuals to boot.
Shadow of the Beast
Gory? Check. Bloody? Check. Decapitations? Check. Angry beast charging across the desert killing everything in it’s path? Check. Check. Check!
A re-imagining of the original Shadow of the Beast was revealed at Gamescom in 2013, but it wasn’t until recently we actually saw some gameplay. What we saw looked fantastically gory and fun. Released for the first time back in 1989, it was considered revolutionary at the time for its atmospheric soundtrack and graphics. The developers behind the remake, Heavy Spectrum Entertainment Labs (bit of a mouthful) are aiming to recreate the atmosphere and feeling of the original games, and take the gore and combat to new levels of insane. There will be combos, decapitations and enough blood to make Kratos cringe. Whether we see more of the brutal combat on display at E3 is a dream of yours truly, but we will have to wait and see.
E3 2015 is set to be as big as ever, with plenty of great titles we hope to see at the Sony press conference, but is there any we have missed you are looking forward to? Let us know in the comments!
