Spoiler Alert: There are more women on this list.
While we’ve all shunned DJ Mag for their shameless tactics to get results as well as their lack of women, Resident Advisor’s Top 100 DJ list only draws a series of “who the hell are these people” comments from the general public. Even if you’re not heavily immersed in the techno/house/underground scene as other dance music fans, this world does exist, and the women on this year’s list earned it. Nicole Moudaber, Margaret Dygas, Tama Sumo, Sonja Moonear, Maya Jane Coles, tINI, Helena Hauff, The Black Madonna, and Nina Kravitz all made the cut, with Kravitz ranking the highest at #20.
Similar to Armin Van Buuren’s reign a top of the DJ Mag poll a few years ago, Dixon has proven that his loyal fan base and the respect of his peers have earned him the top spot for the third year in a row, which is an impressive feat no matter what list you’re on or what genre you play.
RA’s Top 100 DJs, which is the antithesis of the DJ Mag poll, features more underground names than the ubiquitous acts people are used to seeing on festival lineups. Artists like Seth Troxler (#7), Adam Beyer (#19), Richie Hawtin (#21), Claude VonStroke (#63), and Carl Cox (#59), are much further down the list, with names like Eric Prydz and Ida Engberg not even on there at all. As mainstream EDM continues to spread across the globe, the house/techno scene plunges deeper and deeper into itself, and makes the RA Top 100 an expert-level list impervious to corruption.
