Terrance Walton on Helping Tomorrow’s Leaders Recruit More Reps

Terrance Walton was in the height of his corporate career in mortgage when the economy crashed. He turned to network marketing. His story.

Awesome Terrance, thanks so much for doing this interview! You have a great story, I would love to know more about. So, let’s get started!

Where were you born and raised, what was childhood like, and what did you want to be when you ‘grew up?’

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA.  I am the youngest of three boys.  I remember my childhood being pretty rough, at times, because of the neighborhood we lived in.  We didn’t have much money, but we seemed to make it through those tough times as a family.

Education was drilled into my head by my parents.  They told me if I didn’t want to be a product of the environment we lived in that the only escape would be to obtain a college degree.

My mother would always sit at the kitchen table early Saturday morning trying to figure out which bill was going to be paid and which bill could wait until later.

I would sit there with her and tell her she wouldn’t have to worry about bills because one day I would be a big success.  I told her I was going to be an accountant when I grew up because I wanted to learn everything about money, so I could make sure we were never without it again.

What did your parents do for a living and was there any Entrepreneurship in the family?

My parents were blue collar workers.  My dad was a forklift operator for different warehouses in the Philly area. My mom worked odd jobs doing custodial work for hospitals.

As I started my freshmen year in high school, my mom decided the only way she could help pay for my college tuition was to enroll in college and obtain her degree.

At 40 years of age, my mom graduated with honors at Penn State University with a B.S. in Nursing.  She went on to pass her state boards test and officially reached her goal of becoming a registered nurse.

There weren’t any entrepreneurs in the family that I recall.  I do believe my entrepreneurial fires were stoked by watching  my mother take charge and recreate her life with one small decision.  She showed me that when there seems like no way out.  You can always create a way out.  She is my hero:)

You went into Mortgage. Can you tell us how that began, and what your career was like, the ups and downs and everything in between?

In 2002, I was recruited into the mortgage industry from the pharmaceutical sales industry.  I was actually on vacation and a friend of mine thought I would be great at it and set up the interview for me.

The interviewers consisted of the company’s top producer and the branch manager.  They interviewed me at Outback Steakhouse and it went something like this.

The top producer lays out six pay stubs totaling over 100k in six months.  I told him and the manager that I thought the pay stubs were fake and I didn’t believe them.  They assured me this was no joke and I accepted the position into mortgage sales.

By my second month, I had already made my first of many five figure checks and I would never look back or so I thought.  I went on to become the number one leading the region in sales. I was soon promoted to a run my own branch three years later.

The only catch was that I had to convince my wife to sell our home and move from the Philly suburbs to the Chicago area.  We decided to move and I accepted the position.

At this time, we were on cloud nine because they had given us so much money to move and get setup.  We immediately had a new construction home built and I went to work.

Two years later, I was informed that due to the current mortgage climate they were closing down majority of the branches across the country including mine.

The corporate office sent “the closers” to our office to shut it down.  They asked me to gather all 20 of my employees into the conference room.  They played a 30 second recording from the CEO thanking us for our commitment to them and told us we had 30 minutes to pack our stuff and be out.

How could I forget? After five years of giving this company everything, I was out of a job.  They were kind enough to give me 4 weeks severance though…lol!

Imagine 20 of your employees crying looking at you for direction after we were all let go.  It was at this time that I vowed to chase my entrepreneurial dream with a passion.

I would never allow any job to pull the financial rug out from under my family again.  This is when I found network marketing.  I took my first two unemployment checks and joined my first network marketing company.

When did you discover MLM, and what was your first two years like?

As I mentioned,  I discovered MLM after the mortgage company I worked for shut down its branches and eventually went out of business altogether.  My first two years in network marketing / MLM were the worst.  I say this because I thought I was this hot to trot sales guy who could sell anyone and anything.

I honestly couldn’t stress just how wrong I was about that.  It took me much longer than two years to realize that I needed to develop additional skills to increase my value so I could offer that same value to others.

What are the three best tips you have for new network marketers?

First, I would say to increase your value.  Learn everything about the industry, products and especially marketing.  Personal development will be key in your success.

Second, save yourself the time and headache of trying to figure things out on your own. There are so many resources and coaches that will help you compress that learning curve.

Third, be coachable and understand your success isn’t going to happen overnight.  Surround yourself with the proper support system, put in the work and be patient.

You found a system called MLSP, can you explain what that is and who is it for?

I have to say that I am extremely thankful to have found MLSP.  My Lead System Pro (MLSP) is a system for all entrepreneurs looking to build their brand and build their business all under 1 roof.

You will gain access to LIVE weekly lead-generation training, a full-blown funnel & website creator, a professional wordpress-based blogging platform, a world-class CRM, powerful affiliate products that pay 100%, and everything else you require.

What is and how important is Attraction Marketing?

Attraction is definitely a key strategy for entrepreneurs who are looking to create a lucrative business.  A good attraction marketing system is going to do 4 things.

One it’s going to attract an endless supply of quality leads. Second part of the system is creating a relationship with these leads.

Third, the system will allow you to generate income from these leads, and not just a one hitter, but residual. And the last part of the system is duplicating to those that join your opportunity.

Remember, this system only works if you do.  You are the main component.  You have to continually add value to yourself through various trainings, webinars, live events etc, so that you can give that same value back to others.  Only then will people reach out to you for advice wanting to know more of what you’re doing.

I love your blog! How old is it, how many posts are on it, and what is your daily traffic like?

Thanks! I really appreciate that.  My blog is about 7 months old with 38 posts so far.  As of now, my daily traffic average is about 55 plus visitors per day.

Should every internet marketer blog and why?

I strongly believe every internet marketer should invest in a blog.  The reason being is that you have to create an online home, in a sense, so people can find you.  If you’re consistently providing people with great value, where will they find more.

For example, you have to go to a university to find a professor who teaches a specific subject.  He or she will be in a specific classroom on specific days.  The same stands for your blog.  It is essentially the cornerstone of your business.

If people are finding value in the information you provide, they will naturally want more.  You need to provide them with a domain name where they can locate your blog and dig into all the other great information you’re providing.

What’s the best way to generate leads for you these days, and can you share a technique?

The best way I generate leads is by promoting  weekly MLSP webinars on Facebook and boosting the post.  Every week they have a value packed webinar touching on different topics ranging from how to generate leads, how to better position your online business on FB Live, etc.

I like FB because you can create a target market to advertise to when you boost the post.  You can target network marketers who struggle with the same issues that will be addressed on the webinar.  Since your post is typically congruent with their needs, the chance of that person reaching out to you for more info is extremely high.

By the way, boosting a FB post allows you to target your audience, but you may pay $10 to boost a post for a few days.  You reach a larger target audience who will respond positively to your post.

What is your favorite book right now and why?

I’m currently re-reading How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie.

Anytime I start thinking of myself too much in regards to what I want, I pick up this book.  Dale always reminds me that everything I want in life can be gained by helping others. When you become more interested in people versus trying to become more interesting, you will see an immediate success shift in your business.

~

What are your goals for 2017?

My goals for 2017 are to continually focus on my personal development so I’m always adding value back into people’s lives.  I would like to help at least 50 new people learn the system that I’m using take their business to the next level.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” -Marianne Williamson

This is hands down one of my favorite quotes.  I will always believe that we are so much more powerful than what we give ourselves credit to be.

We have to stop being afraid of failing and know that success was ours from birth.  It has been there for the taking all this time.

There’s even a bit of attraction marketing within this quote, “And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission.
