Jeremy Heady on Internet Marketing and the Explosive Marketer

Jeremy Heady was making good money loading explosives in the Marines when he read Rich Dad Poor Dad in Iraq. His life changed. Here’s his story.

Awesome Jeremy, thanks so much for doing this interview! Let’s get started!

Where were you born and raised, what was childhood like, and what did you want to be when you ‘grew up?’

Where were you born and raised, what was childhood like, and what did you want to be when you ‘grew up?’

I was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana.  I was pretty much a nerd growing up partially because I was smarter than other kids my own age.

For many years, I wanted to be an astronaut.  The only reason I gave up on that dream was because I found out that most astronomers don’t become astronauts.

Many times during my childhood though, I wanted to be included in upper class society.  I would hear of these rags to riches stories and dream of that being me one day. I never truly realized the impact of that dream until later in life.

What did your parents do for a living and was there any Entrepreneurship in the family?

My mom worked in retail and childcare.  She received a degree in child psychology in her early forties, but never actually did anything with the degree.  She then struggled with student loans the rest of her working life.  This made me want to avoid student loans at all costs.

My biological father was mostly a factory and warehouse worker his whole life and didn’t have much financial means either.

The only entrepreneurship in my family is my step-brother and myself.  My stepbrother started his own carpet installation company in his early twenties while I was still in the service.

What was the Marines like, how did bootcamp transform you, and how has the Marines shaped your life and business thereafter?

Joining the Marines was probably the best decision I ever made in my life.  I learned leadership skills, negotiation skills, and communication skills among many others.

Boot camp taught me how to follow orders quickly and efficiently.  In marketing, this translates to the idea of coachability.  The Marines also taught me how to respect myself and how to elicit respect from others without being offensive.

What was the downside of the marines, and what book did you read while in Iraq that changed your life?

There were two major downsides to the Marines:  The first is the long deployments away from my family.  This put a huge strain on my family and myself.  The second is the lack of freedom during down time.

A Marine is considered a Marine 24/7/365 whether on duty or off duty.  This translates to little things in my own time being monitored by my superiors.

For instance, I could get in trouble for not shaving on the weekends. This may sound a little trivial, but after years of these little things adding up, it started to drain on my personal life.

While I was in Iraq, another Marine had the book, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and let me borrow it.  I read it front to back in a few days and decided to take action immediately upon returning to the states.

When did you discover MLM, and what was your first two years like?

This is a tricky question because it depends on what you define as being an MLM and what constitutes discovering.  My mother tried being the Avon lady and at one time even sold Amway products when I was younger.

My first experience was a company called SFI which stands for “Six Figure Income.” I signed up with them and was left to the wolves.

I attempted to run a Clickbank affiliate website shortly after that and even tried running an Ebay drop shipping business.  After getting back from Iraq, I decided to start learning about the real estate industry.

My first goal was to get my broker’s license because I thought it was necessary to invest.  I also tried my hand at real estate investing in the beginning and flopped miserably because I didn’t have the proper education on how to do it correctly.

What are the three best tips you have for new network marketers?

The first and most important tip is to fix your mindset. Every successful person in the world has a positive mindset.  Every training program for a new opportunity or new system has mindset as the first lesson.  There’s a very good reason for this and should not be skipped.

The second tip is to treat your business opportunity like a business.  I see too many new marketers trying to treat it like a job.  It’s not a job, it’s a business similar to a franchise.

There are going to be times in the beginning especially when you are paying out more than is coming both in time and money.  This is part of the growing pains of building any business and the marketer that understands that has a greater chance of success.

The third tip is to realize from day one that you are going to have failures.  You are going to make mistakes.  There are going to be times where you are going to lose money even.  This is not a matter of “if” but rather “when”.

There’s no such thing as a successful entrepreneur that hasn’t dealt with failure in their career.  The entrepreneur that understands that also understands that failure is necessary for success.  One of my more recent blog posts addresses this issue in more detail.

You found a system called MLSP, can you explain what that is and who is it for?

MLSP stands for My Lead System Pro.  It is an educational system that gives training, tools, and support to new and seasoned marketers.  For many professionals, the educational route taken is getting a college degree.

While this may work well for many professions, MLSP took the idea of a college degree and tailored their education towards the niche market of internet marketers.

Just like a college, MLSP also has marketers with more knowledge and experience give training to the newer, less experienced marketers.  Although you can make money by promoting MLSP services and products, they are not an MLM and should not be treated as such.

MLSP is for any marketer who wants to take the MLM business model to the next level.  It is not for the wishy washy marketer who only wants to make an occasional sale, it’s for the marketer who wants to go full time and build a true business empire.  A lawyer goes to law school, a doctor goes to medical school, so a marketer should go to marketing school.

How important is providing value instead of spam to the marketplace?

To understand this, you have to know what “spam” is.  Spam is unwanted solicitation.  The sales profession has long been a studied practice among professionals.

One thing that’s universally agreed on is that people buy from people they know, like, and trust.  Some may have heard this called “building rapport.”

To gain that trust from a client, providing value in the beginning can accomplish this.  When you provide value, people are more likely to come to you and ask you what program you are in.

What are some leadership traits you must have as an internet marketer?

The biggest one is integrity.  One way to show your integrity to a potential client is comment on the weaknesses of the program or product you are selling, but without a negative connotation.  This is why reviews are becoming a great marketing strategy because it shows integrity.

There’s faults and weaknesses in every program or product out there.  Addressing those weaknesses is a great way to earn the trust of your client.  Integrity also means standing by your word.  Attend the appointment you said you were going to attend and be on time.  If you don’t know something, say you don’t know.

Another one is commitment.  Be committed to your team to help them succeed.  I see too many marketers sign someone up and then leave them high and dry to figure it out on their own.

The last one I’ll mention is toughness.  There is only so much you can do for another person.  If they are unwilling to take the necessary steps to move forward and you’ve supported them as much as possible, you need to be tough enough to one: not blame yourself, and two: hold them accountable.

I love your blog! How old is it, how many posts are on it, and what is your daily traffic like?

I started my blog in February of 2015.  It currently has around 40 posts on it.  My daily traffic while I was promoting it was about 15-20 per day, but since I’ve stopped promoting it, it doesn’t get as much attention now.

Should every internet marketer blog and why?

Oddly enough, I’m going to say no to this.  Blogging requires a lot of time and effort and it can take quite a while to see a return on that investment.  This really depends on the marketer and their strengths and weaknesses.

If someone loves writing and telling stories, then blogging is a great way to go.  Other people prefer to do email marketing rather than blogging although they can be mixed into one format.

Personally, I prefer talking one on one with people.  Each marketer has unique strengths and abilities they bring to the marketplace.  A successful marketer plays to their strengths.

What’s the best way to generate leads for you these days, and can you share a technique?

I got most of my leads through facebook when I was still marketing.  The technique I used was going through the network marketing groups and visiting the profiles of other marketers.

I would take a few minutes to get a sense of the person through their profile and find one thing that I had in common with that person.

Then I would message them with a personally directed message mentioning the thing we have in common.  I would talk small talk for a few minutes and then ask them about their business opportunities and start a discussion.

I would try to find out where their weaknesses lie and then offer them a free product (usually from MLSP) to gain their email.  There is more to this technique, but that should get some people started.

What is your favorite book right now and why?

My favorite book is probably “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu.  Even though this book was written centuries ago, the strategies and the psychological viewpoints are still relevant today.  Mr. Tzu saw war similar to the game of chess.  The commander with the best strategies and the best compromises wins.

~

What are your goals for 2017?

Build my real estate investment business into a six figure income and incorporate business acquisitions and mergers.  Ultimately, my goal is to be fully self-supported by the end of the year.

~

What is your favorite quote and why?

“Don’t let anyone ever tell you, ‘you can’t do something,’ not even me!  If you want something, go get it!  Period!” -Chris Gardner

This was quoted in the movie, “The Pursuit of Happyness” by Will Smith who played Chris Gardner.

He was speaking to his son after he just told him he couldn’t do something.  This quote is the ultimate entrepreneur quote in my opinion.

The reason many aspiring entrepreneurs don’t make it is because they let the negativity around them consume them.  This quote tells people to ignore the negativity and just go get what you want.
