Destrie Monis on Creating an Epic Life with Attraction Marketing
Destrie Monis was all set to become a Mechanical Engineer when he realized he didn’t want to work for someone else the next 40 years. Our interview.
Thank you so much for doing this interview, Destrie! I’m already fascinated by your story, but want to learn more about you. So, let’s get started!
You were born and raised in Hawaii. What was childhood like for you and what did your parents do for a living?
-My childhood in Hawaii was amazing!
I grew up on the island of Kauai and am so blessed to be able to call what so many people would call paradise and a place many people dream about visiting, my home.
Just a little bit of a back story of how and why my parents found themselves raising my younger brother Derrick and myself in Hawaii:
My parents immigrated to Hawaii from the Philippines. Both of my parents were one of 10 children in the family. They had a tough life growing up. Each with 9 other brothers and sisters to help take care of, living in a third world country.
I remember hearing stories of how there would be days when my parents would have to split one hard-boiled egg between their family.
It was not the most ideal life to be living.
When they found an opportunity to be able to immigrate to America, they took it. They did not want to provide the same lifestyle they had growing up, to their children.
I believe that it takes a lot of courage for someone to leave their home country and settle in another. They did this in order to provide their children with more opportunities and a better lifestyle that America had to offer.
I completely respect my parents for their decision and am extremely grateful that they chose Hawaii to raise my brother and myself.
For a living, my mother worked in retail and my father worked as a facility maintenance engineer.
Growing up in Hawaii offered so many amazing opportunities to explore different hiking trails, different beaches around the island, different foods and such an array of different cultures that I didn’t fully appreciate until I moved to the mainland for college.

Was there any entrepreneurship in your family while growing up?
-There was no entrepreneurship in my family while growing up.
My parents were very hard working employees and raised my brother and I to also be the same. Aside from their full time jobs, they would often take up various part time work like cleaning offices or landscaping to earn some additional income for our family.

You eventually went to college in New York to study engineering, but something didn’t feel right. What was that about?
– Before entering college, I followed the traditional path of going to school and getting good grades, with the vision of doing well so I could get a high paying job after I graduated.
I worked very hard in high school, taking Advanced Placement classes like English, Physics and higher level math classes.
There was a year in my high school career that I doubled up in math classes, so that I could eventually graduate having Calculus under my belt before college. I graduated near the top of my high school class with a cumulative GPA of 3.8.
I was also involved with various extracurricular activities like band, cross country, track, and organizational clubs that did volunteer work to make myself attractive to colleges across the country.
When I eventually attended college in New York to study Mechanical Engineering, I just had a gut feeling that engineering was not the right fit for me.
The problem was I didn’t trust this gut feeling early on and I just continued studying engineering and did not explore other majors to see what was the truly the best fit for me.
You picked up a book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad and what happened next?
-Halfway into my junior year of college, I had a bit of a break down and decided to take some time off to really figure out what I wanted to do with my life.
During that time off, I read a ton of books and Rich Dad, Poor Dad was one of them. It was a book that a friend recommended to me while I was trying to discover what I wanted to do with my life.
This book literally changed my perspective in life. I literally felt like I was Neo being unplugged from the Matrix, after reading this one book.
Up until that point, I did not know of any other way to be successful than following the traditional employee path.
After Rich Dad, Poor Dad I became obsessed with learning more of a non-traditional path to becoming successful and read every book from Robert Kiyosaki that I could get my hands on.
One of the concepts that I picked up when reading Kiyosaki’s books was that if you wanted to become rich, become an Entrepreneur and build your own business.
One of the recommendations Robert made in his books was, “Network Marketing gives people the opportunity with very low risk and very low financial commitment to build their own income generating asset and acquire great wealth.”
So I did some research online to figure out how I could build my own business and work my way towards becoming financially free.
I found a website where a Lawyer was able to leave his job at his family’s Law Practice and Retire at the age of 32. I connected with a business partner of his and that’s how I discovered the Network Marketing industry.

In 2008, you discovered network marketing. Were you still in college, and how did you begin network marketing?
-In 2008, I was still taking some time off from engineering school when I discovered network marketing, but decided to finish up my mechanical engineering degree, despite my newfound knowledge.
I thought to myself that I already invested three and a half years into acquiring a mechanical engineering degree, so what’s another year and a half to finish it?
I mainly finished my degree to make my parents proud and on the side, fervently learned everything that I could about network marketing and entrepreneurship.
After discovering network marketing, I knew that I found something that I was passionate about.
I would learn anything and everything I could about business, entrepreneurship, marketing, copywriting, sales, influence, leadership, mindset, personal development, and communication, while still finishing up the classes I needed to take for my engineering degree.
There were times that I felt like I was double majoring in Engineering and Business, without getting the business degree.
I began network marketing after connecting with that Lawyer’s business partner, Chris, since his story was incredibly relatable to me.
He started in network marketing as a sophomore in college and was able to graduate making a full-time income, not ever having to get a job after he graduated.
I then took the money I saved up during an engineering internship with the US Coast Guard and invested it in a business pack for my primary network marketing company.
What was the biggest struggle for you in the beginning of network marketing and how did you overcome it?
-When I got started in network marketing I didn’t have a huge network and my current network consisted of mostly college students just scraping to get by, people who wouldn’t be interested in starting a business.
After exhausting my friends and family list, I was left wondering what to do next in order for me to be able to build my business.
In order to overcome this, I discovered that I had to learn marketing, particularly Online Marketing so I would be able to generate my own leads for my business and stop struggling talking to people who have no interest in the products I promote or who have no interest in building a business.
~
What would you tell others who wanted to start network marketing?
-My advice to people who are looking to get started in network marketing is to be patient and take the time to learn real business and online marketing skills.
Many people who get started in the network marketing industry are coming from different backgrounds.
There are many people who have never built their own businesses before, which means that there is a huge learning curve for people just entering the industry.
If you have a student mentality, are able to be coached, and have a strong vision of the future you want to create for yourself and your family, you can develop the skills you need to build a successful business.
Just be patient, invest in yourself, and learn from successful people who have already accomplished what you are looking to do.

You discovered Attraction Marketing through reading Magnetic Sponsoring. Is that correct and how do you employ Attraction Marketing?
-Yes, I discovered the concept of Attraction Marketing after reading Magnetic Sponsoring and investing in other Magnetic Sponsoring courses.
I employ the Attraction Marketing concept by creating valuable content that relates to my audience of network marketers wanting to learn how to build their businesses online, through my blog, newsletter email list, and other social media channels.
Attraction Marketing works best when you take ego out of the equation and focus on delivering valuable content to your audience, without the expectation of receiving anything in return.
I love your blog! How old is it, how many posts are on it, and what is traffic like to it each day?
-Thank you Erik!
My blog is a little under a year old. I started my blog DestrieMonis.com at the end of January 2016. I am approaching publishing 100 posts at the time of this interview and right now, traffic to it has been averaging about 3o new views per day and I have been able to generate between 1-5 new leads for my business every day.
A blog can be an amazing resource for network marketers to start branding themselves as an authority, as well as generate leads for their business.
~
I read your post on “focus on one platform.” What does that mean to a network marketer?
-Focusing on one platform is a really big key when getting started online as a network marketer.
There are a ton of different online marketing strategies out there, some examples would be facebook marketing, twitter marketing, instagram, snapchat, youtube, email marketing, pay per click marketing etc.
When I got started online, I used to bounce around from different marketing strategies from one week to the next, never really mastering any and received no results from what people like to call, “Shiny Object Syndrome.”
When you try to become a Jack of All Trades with marketing online, you become a master of none.
So as a network marketer who is looking to get started building their businesses online I would highly suggest picking one social media platform to stick with, learn everything you can about that one platform and marketing strategy, get results first, then start to incorporate other platforms once you’ve gotten consistent generating leads from that one platform.
Personally, I use Facebook as my primary platform to introduce people to my blog.
~
What’s the best method for generating leads for you right now?
-The best method for generating leads I am using right now is Facebook Networking and Facebook Ads.
~
What is your favorite book right now and why?
– That is a tough question! I am an avid reader and would have a tough time just picking one favorite book, but if I had to choose just one book that I am currently reading, I would say Gary Vaynerchuk’s book #AskGaryVee
I had the opportunity to meet Gary Vee in person earlier this year and have always found his content to be incredibly inspirational, motivating and just flat out REAL.
~
What are your goals for 2017?
-For 2017, my goals are to continue to build an audience through my blog and content, help struggling network marketers to learn the skill set of attraction marketing and online marketing to build their businesses, release my own course on these topics, and a book on how to be able to use the internet to build an online business around your passion.
~
What is your favorite quote and why?
-It’s funny that you asked this question Erik!
My favorite quote has always been, “You Can Have Everything in Life That You Want, if You Will Just Help Enough Other People Get What They Want.” by Zig Ziglar, which I found in your signature line under these interview questions. Great minds think alike!
It’s a quote that totally resonates with me because I’m passionate about helping people. Through the network marketing industry and the online marketing platform, I have finally found a way that I can personally make a tremendous impact in this world.
For everyone that reads this Interview post, I hope that I have been able to provide value to you from my own personal experiences and would like to thank Erik Christian Johnson for the opportunity to be able to share my story with you!
