You surely already know, as you’re reading this on a screen, that blogs and online magazines are some of the most inventive and up-to-date tools for planning a travel experience. They’re also invaluable for a bit of passive wanderlust, be it through travel photography, reading up on history or indulging in some food porn (or, as we call it in France, la foodographie). Be it for dining recommendations and reviews, photos, epicurious travel stories or recipes, there’s a whole world of blogs out there for foodies.

Here are ten of the top food blogs:

1. Love and Lemons

Beautifully presented and full of fresh, flavorful and creative recipes, this blog could quite easily replace a number of cookbooks on your shelves. Though the site is not entirely vegetarian, almost all of Love and Lemon’s recipes are meat-free or vegan — and wonderfully hearty.

2. The Broken Bread

LA-based blog The Broken Bread does photography best, with each post a stunning bird’s eye composition of colors, seasonal fruits and savory fare. And if that weren’t inspiration enough to get to work in the kitchen, their recipes are splendid too. Check out their baking in particular, from the Roasted Strawberry and Hazelnut Cake to the perfect Peach Gallette.

3. Vegetarian Ventures

Most food blogs these days provide a range of vegetarian options to get stuck into, but few specialise so well in vegetarianism as Vegetarian Ventures. This site is a mix of recipes and foodie travel, which means it’s full of stories too. And you won’t be going hungry on any of the dishes proposed. Exhibit A: the Three-Grain Burger with Smoked Gouda Pimento and Fried Avocado.

4. Bit By a Fox

A list full of food blogs with no mention of the complementary world of cocktails would feel a bit incomplete. Enter Bit by a Fox, a charming, retro blog full of tempting cocktail recipes. There are lots of classic and custom cocktails, as well as bar reviews that will make you rather thirsty.

5. Rose Water and Orange Blossoms

Lebanese is a delectable cuisine that should get more attention than it does. Maureen Abood’s food blog Rose Water and Orange Blossoms brings the fresh, filling and mint-laden world of Lebanese food alive with creative recipes and beautiful photographs. I’ll take five of the Blackberry Lavender Sugar Buns, thank you.

6. The Vanilla Bean Blog

There are wonderful recipes for baked goods scattered across all the blogs on this list, but no food blog seems to specialize so well in baking as The Vanilla Bean Blog. Writer Sarah mixes her recipes in with “kitchen moments”; musings and family stories that make her posts so much more interesting to read. Her recipes combine classic baking styles (here the cake reigns supreme) with unusual, nostalgic twists. S’mores Cake, anyone?

7. Gluten-free Girl and the Chef

As food producers cotton on to the demand for gluten free products of all forms, it’s getting easier and easier to eat a delicious, filling, gluten-free diet. But as a member of a family with three celiac sufferers, I can attest to the real need for some inspiring gluten-free recipes. Enter Gluten-free Girl and the Chef, a site full of GF recipes, cooking guides and support.

8. Broadsheet

Less concerned with recipes and more focused on dining recommendations and restaurant reviews, Broadsheet is becoming a go-to for both Melbournians and Sydneysiders wanting to learn more about what their city’s bars, cafes and restaurants have to offer. Broadsheet’s writers are discerning: if they recommend it, you can pretty safely book your next date there.

9. Tomato Kumato

Food writing shouldn’t just be about ingredients and directions. The best food blogs tell stories, about the writer’s life, the dish and how it came to be part of their repertoire. Written by American in Paris Emily Monaco — who also happens to be an Epicure & Culture contributor — Tomato Kumato is one of those storytelling food blogs. Read to find a wide range of simple yet delicious recipes and to learn about life across two very different places.

10. Chocolate and Zucchini

A French staple and a rather famous food blog all over the place, Chocolate and Zucchini is full to the brim with scrumptious, approachable recipes that use simple ingredients to craft distinctly French dishes. Author Clotilde Dusoulier’s been running the blog since 2003, so there’s no shortage of options available, but I recommend you start here to keep things classic.
