People are often adverse to paying for insurance on an item, they don’t like the thought of additional costs being tacked on to what is most likely already an expensive item. What’s worse, is that they errantly think that nothing serious will ever happen. This is why many people fail to plan for the worst and take out a life insurance policy to protect their loved ones, or at the very least take out a policy to cover “final expenses”.  They take the risk, and for what? To save a few measly dollars each month that they most likely wouldn’t miss regardless. It’s reasons such as this that most countries make all forms of auto insurance a legal requirement. Even if you don’t see the value in insuring your own vehicle, you need protection in case you damage another persons vehicle and/or hurt them in the process.

In Canada, bike enthusiasts will have motorcycle insurance, as it is a mandatory requirement governed by law. The definition of a motorcycle is a motorized two or three-seat vehicle with handlebars and a seat. So if you have the kind of bike you’re still pedaling with your feet, then you are OK to skip on the insurance. Now the level of coverage that you buy is entirely up to you. While carrying insurance is mandatory, that is more for the protection of others rather than yourself and your vehicle. There are varying forms of comprehensive insurance that will cover a slew of potential issues. For instance, you can take out voluntary level of coverage that protect against disasters other than an accident, like a fire, theft, and vandalism. This coverage is available to just about anyone who owns a motorcycle, provided they are also properly licensed drivers as well.

Just do a quick internet search of “motorcycle insurance Canada” and you will find plenty of options to choose from, and a wealth of information on what is available to you. Now as I said before, coverage is available to just about any licensed driver, but you need to also be aware of some other limitations. Certain enhancements and upgrades to your bike may make it ineligible for coverage. Also, coverage can be dependent on your driving record, and whether you have had any previous criminal convictions, especially the type that involve a motorized vehicle. Obviously any legal or non-payment issues can also play a factor when trying to obtain insurance.
