The X Factor 2016 winner Matt Terry appeared on This Morning earlier today to talk about claiming victory over the weekend.

When asked by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby about his win Matt admitted, “It feels amazing. It’s the most incredible feeling and a feeling I never thought I’d feel. I thought I would come second, I really did… It was so, so close, it was such an open race. But with a little bit of luck and support, I guess, goes a long way.”

The singer also revealed that he hadn’t had much time to sleep since winning last night. “I’ve had about two hours sleep. I said hello to everyone at the after party, saw my family, then rushed to a hotel near here… I just couldn’t sleep!”

Saturday night’s show saw Matt duet with his mentor Nicole Scherzinger on Prince’s classic track Purple Rain. Discussing their duet he said, “To perform Purple Rain with Nicole – that was just life changing for me! I already felt like a winner when I did that song, I was like, I don’t mind what happens… that was a moment that I’ll never forget.”

Matt’s debut single, When Christmas Comes Around, was released straight after his win last night. The track is an original that was written by Ed Sheeran.

Is he hoping to clinch the Christmas number one? “I’m just so overwhelmed, I don’t think it’s sunk in for me yet. I think I need to go to sleep and wake up tomorrow! To have a number one single would be amazing…that’s insane. Hopefully if I keep on working hard good things will come.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV. Watch Matt’s performance from last night’s final below:
